I cycled for forty-five minutes through a dense fog which stubbornly refused to dissipate. Smashed cars, abandoned street sweepers, overturned vans appeared suddenly out of the fog, their shapes indistinct humps, gauzy at the edges. The sun came and went in early April, interrupted by gusty days when windblown rain would rattle against the windowpanes and blow puffs of soot down the chimney and into the front room.
