You make concessions.  First you say...just a little bit, just for now, because you're hungry.  Then, it's just a sip, you need to wet your throat.  But then a little bite becomes a bigger bite and wetting your throat becomes a swallow and before you know it you are just plain hungry and thirsty and you don't have anything left.

I used to be an overnight worker. While the world around me slept, I was awake. I thought then that the darkness was my friend, an intimate friend. My father wanted me to write the great American novel. I remember him asking me when I was a kid whether I was g** because I wanted to write stories and didn’t care for playing football.
