when one begins to lose things they care about regularly, the only thing they can do is block it out and stare on impassively. that sounds bad, but the ones who say you must always remember somebody (in a good or a bad way) don't know what they're talking about. apathy is the one thing that keeps the mind functioning with any degree of effectiveness.

i stepped around the corner of the small shed and quickly scanned my surroundings. off to one side, a dilipidated strip mall took up the majority of my vision, neon signs long-since faded by the glaring sun and glass doors shattered. to the other side, gutted cars sat parked in the strip's lot, the paint peeling away to reveal rusted metal, pocked and scarred from sitting so long unattended. the glass windshields here were broken, too. blood, dark blood, stained nearly every available…
