Leadership is a funny thing. When you find yourself in a group, and you suddenly realize this group relies on your voice for guidance, your voice seems to get a lot quieter-- especially when the group is full of people you know. My stiff, slightly shaking body seemed so fragile at that moment. I realized I had somehow ascended to leader of the group, and as an innumerable horde of zombies beat down the doors all around my group of terrified and unprepared friends, I was suddenly unsure if that…

The drive to my house was uneventful, but chilling at the same time. It was getting closer and closer to sundown. The time was a little after three in the afternoon, and the streets were no longer empty. There were individual zombies wandering about harmlessly along the streets and even in the roads. Leo did his best to avoid them as we drove back through Joliet towards my apartment.
My entire neighborhood was overrun. I could not imagine how some of my neighbors would have reacted…

As we sprinted past tree after tree, I could see through the foliage into the dead cornfield to my left side. The idea of running through a forest beside a cornfield, fleeing from zombies nonetheless, felt so cliché that I once again felt the need to stop and give myself a reality check. Ryan passed me before stopping and turning toward me with a curious expression.
“This is unreal,” I commented with a trembling sigh.
“Unreal or not, it’s happening. Come…

We were expecting the worst. Once we got to Statesville, we rushed into the ‘big hall’ room and sealed the doors. The catwalk that went over the middle of the room had only a few doors, and we used rebar we found on the way to bar the doors with. The higher ground should protect us from the weaker zombies, and the barricades would help to keep us from getting surrounded. My only worry was the memory I had of the zombies that smashed my car; they were able to jump fifteen feet in one leap.…

“Are you okay? We’re still at John’s. Dana got hurt, but John says she’ll be okay.”
The text message was the first I had heard from Heather in hours. As I took the back seat of Leo’s car, I quickly sent a reply.
“We’re fine. Me, Ryan, and Leo just got supplies from my house. I love you and I’m praying for you. Please send John’s address ASAP.”
I assumed they were probably pretty busy, so I did not expect an immediate reply. My phone was already in…

The streets were empty around me. That could have been attributed to the fact that it was early morning on Thanksgiving Day, but I assumed that it was because impending doom was so close for so many. It was not so naïve to think that I was the only one to experience the outburst in my apartment. There would be others who had been attacked around the same time. Of course, if other people were attacked, and were less capable of defending themselves, then that would mean more zombies in unexpected…

The road ahead becomes obscured as young blood is smeared across my windshield. The two I had picked up were both quietly sitting in the back seat. I decide to break the silence, "You guys ok?" I ask. The girl begins to speak, stuttering through some of her words, "Yeah......my name is Nicole." The boy then also begins to talk, "...Richard." I turn over my shoulder and take a quick glance at their fear-stricken faces, "I'm Pete." I begin asking Nicole questions about what had happened, hoping…

I am feeling fatalistic today.
Managed to make it home, don't ask me how. I just ran. I'm not sure how long I can stay here... but for the time being I think I can rest. My apartment remained surprisingly unmolested but after this I don't really know where to go.
I've long known that sooner or later this was going to happen. I was a big horror movie buff as a kid. When I was younger, I couldn't help but wonder: Would it be better to be one of the first or the last to…

Spring has strung up here on the 5 mile praire. Its been raining alot, which has softened the ground tremendously. We have started to plan our gardens for later in the spring, tomatoes, wheat, potatoes, squash, strawberries, ect. The rotters havent been much of a problem, only a few sporradic attacks. I went into town yesterday, to check on the house and St. Johns, the letter I wrote is still tacked to the door. I guess we will just have to wait and see if anyone comes back.
Oh, I…

The Road to Resolutions.
The sky overhead darkened, the ominous clouds gathering overhead only helping the sense of depression and helplessness that had so recently begun to cling to the occupants of the suburban that rocketed down the road.
He had only been driving for about half an hour since they had left town, and already Joseph could feel the nagging sense of doubt building in the pit of his stomach. Right before their departure from the police…

Laying on the porch was Howard. He was on his back, with three large holes in his chest, and blood was starting to ooze from his body. My stomach hitched, then heaved. There was a dead man on my front porch and I had shot him. After I composed myself, I stepped out on the porch and looked at him. He smelled terrible, was soaking wet, and had blood all over his face and chest. A lot of blood. His hands and arms were scratched and scraped to hell. His clothes were covered in blood. He was a mess.…

There's a new smell in the air. I used to be able to smell the freshly cut grass on a spring day, the smell of a thunderstorm on the horizon, even the smell of the ocean floating by with the wind. Now all I smell is death. We managed to get the lock open to the metal door leading to the roof. The first time we've seen the devastation outside since we locked ourselves in here. No one could be prepared to see what was over the edge of the roof. What seemed like half of the city had flocked to…

i went to scavenge the food-mart across town yesterday.
i had a good deal of luck making it over there; i didn't end up dealing with even one runner.
it seems that a small group of people have decided to make fort out of the food-mart, so i was unable to get in to find any remaining can food. I still managed to get something to eat anyway.
Two of them left their fort to cross to the old mall.
I fallowed them staying well out of sight. I guess at first i was just wondering…

Chances are he's stumbling along the avenue with the rest of the brain-sucking groaners.
Its been a long night, I'll be honest. Real estate offices were never really made for sleeping, and the upstairs office with the couch has windows. Besides, it requires crossing the open expanse of the food court to make it to the administration doors which may have been locked by those selfish cowardly pricks.
I thought they were bad enough when we got those annoying holiday memos…

Seeing the group of people coming towards us scared me for the first time since everything started. We still had to get the kids in the car and the people were already more then half way to us and they were moving fast. For a second I couldn’t think of what to do, I was rooted to the spot where I stood wondering if we were gonna have enough time to get them loaded and moving before the mob got there. I finally collected myself enough to tell Shannon and Jeff to hurry. I was heading back up the…
