5. the falls plan.

We had a pretty successful “scavenger hunt” today. We found some canned mangos and apricots, plus a whole, unopened container of beef jerky! Apparently the last people through town didn’t like the fruit, and the jerky canister had rolled under a shelf and was missed! Lucky us. I should buy a lottery ticket… Jim and Mildred are very nice people. Jim is a retired police officer (30 years on the streets) and Mildred was a stay-at-home-mom. They only had one child, a son, who lives in California… Continue

4. The plan in action.

While I write this, I can see both my daughters and my wife sleeping on the floor. While the building is secure, and we do get some sleep, it isn’t the fitful rest we need or want. Nerves are shot, tempers are short and we are running low on supplies. I’m sure playing lookout and keeping watch is making me more tired than ever. Thankfully we found this place and met Jim and Mildred. I’ll write more on that later.

3. The last good morning.

I’ve always been a little long-winded, so I’ll try to keep these posts brief and to the point. Short and sweet, if possible. It’s a hazard in the teaching profession to drone on and on. Bueller. Bueller.

I awoke to the smell of bacon. Lord knows I loves me some bacon! It was enough of a normal event that I wondered if I had dreamt the events of the previous evening. I tried to open my eyes enough to see without bringing in so much light that I couldn’t doze off again. The two girls… Continue

2. The escape plan.

It's been a few days. Things here haven't been great, but we've managed to survive a little while more. The others keep talking about rescue, but honestly I've tried to forget about that. It feels a little like being a Cubs fan. After a while, you sort of give up on the notion of a win, but are pleasantly hoping it will happen. Someday. The "we'll-get-'em-next-time" mentality. I just wish I could get a damn hot dog and a beer.

I re-read the first entry and anyone who reads this thing… Continue

The realization.

I've had some time to separate my old life from the way things are now, and I thought, while it's a bit quiet and the others are resting, I'd put some thoughts down. Maybe it will be useful someday. Providing anyone lives long enough to read it. I really don't know what to say. It all still seems a bit surreal, yet it's almost like the past is wiped out and this new "life" is all we know.

I guess I should start simply. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my Father. Prepare to die.… Continue
