What is, in your opinion, the best short range weapon? Short range being arm distance away, so no swords or guns.

My favorite short range weapon is the WWII trench knife. It is a combo of a 7 inch knife and brass knuckles. The knife was designed to go through an inch thick steel helmet and the human skull, so penatration and durability is no question. Also, the length and strenght of some of them, like the in my picture, means you can server a spine with ease. Just imagine this senario:

I have two of my Trench knives on my hands, and others on my belt (i collect them, i currently own 12, one of wich has actually killed three japs), I am in an open area, and there are 10 zombie in 3 waves heading toward me. Tho e first wave of 3 reaches me. I use one knife to pierce a skull, killing it. I use the brass knuckles to neatly brain one of them in the temple, cracking the skull and killing it. The, withdrawing my knife from the skull of the first zombie, i whip it around in a circle to sever its spine, then use my other knife to stab down inot its still snapping head. The next wave of four reaches me.

I use my brass knucles on both hands to hit both temples of the first zombie, resulting in an instakill. I stab one knife into a skull, then use the other knife to decapitate the dead zombie. I fling the head at the next zombie, stunning it and making it stumble, but my knife is still in its head. The next zombie reaches me. I pull another knife out of my belt and stab it in the eye, sink my blade into the skull till it comes out the other side. I the turn the blade around 180 degrees, chopping the head in half. The zombie that I threw the head at aproches me, and i simply use both knives to stab through its temples. I pick up the dead head and pull my knife out of it, then throw it at the first zombie that reaches me, stunning but not killing it. The next two reach me, and i dispatch them with a simple stab and twist to the eye sockets. The final one, the one that I threw the knive at, reache sme, and i realize that it is a runner and is using the knife to stab at me. If that knife even cuts my, i am infected and die.

The runner clumsily lunges at me, and i doge the thrust an punch it in the face with my brass knuckles. The zombie reels back, and i stab at its chest, as its hand is covering its head. My serrated blade gets caught in its ribcage, and i pull it toward me and punch it in the face with my brass knuckles. I am full of rage and adrenaline, and i want to enjoy this.

The zombie lunges at me again, and slice its arm off at the shoulder. I pull my knife out form its chest, then pull my right arm back.

I swear, the zombies eye open wide and it turns away.

I swing my arm in and punch it in the neck hard enough to snap its spine. The zombie falls to the ground, all control of its body lost. I kneel on its chest, and begin to punch it over and over again with my brass knucles. Blood spatters everywhere-good thing I am wearing protecting gear all over my body, or i would be infected.

After a good five minute of anger managment class (apocalypse style) i stand up and look at my work. The zombie no longer has most of its skull, its brains are splattered everywhere, and the neck is no longer connected to what is left of the bottom of the skull.

As you can see, this is a realistic fight (if zombie were real, that is). These knives are not made for throwing, but if you hit a zombie in the head with the knuckles, it can be stunned long enough for you to regain your bearings or kill some more zombies.

Please, send me your favorite short range weapons and some senarios if you like.

And yes, these are real weapons, and they do make double sided ones, if you know where to buy them.

My favorite would have to be the hatchet. Basically an axe but shorter. Sharp blade makes decapitation swift and you can at least use it at short range if you get surrounded, much easier to manouver than a normal axe. But thats my nerdy side showing.

Mine would be my handy Trench Shovel.  It is razor sharp and can cut through small tree branches.  No scenario other than chop, pitch, and parry.
