Clockin' Out

Now I don't claim to have all the answers.
I don't really think anyone does.
But I sure as hell aint gonna die.

I'd worked there for about 3 years now, the Adams Trauma Center, and had finally began to settle in. Funny in'it? How we always remember the minute; the microscopic when something big's gonna go down. I still remember the tables... The two tone feel as my hands would glide across them. I loved my life. Adored it.
'Till her.

She was just like everyone else had been. Family, promising career, yadda, yadda, yadda. We don't care. We never care. We just wanted an answer. Go or no? Eh? What's it gonna be? They stared at me for a while. The couple looked bedraggled and strained. "Allowing my daughter to die was not one of the things I was looking forward to in life." The man said; staring into my eyes. "I understand,"I began mechanically"this must be really hard on you. She has no chance of survival and other patients need to be admitted. We need this bed." The man peered off into the distance and; ever so slightly, ever so minutely, nodded his head.
"Pull the plug"
Did I say that or did he? Oh well, no matter. A nurse appeared out of the air to my right and walked over to the various pumps and machines that we're keeping the girl alive.

Oh God If we had only known.

Funny, really. The way we remember. She didn't want to die. And she didn't. She was alive and well. An autumn child, she was. She sprung out of bed and thrashed out at the surrounding bystanders. The nurse was the first to go. Then her parents. I ran out of the room just before she did. I lost her in the crowds, but that only proved to be worse as she was enjoying them more than pursuing me. I dove into a supply closet. What was that I remembered a while ago? Irony, that was it. It was a quote from an old friend, ah yes,

Seemed a harmless little fuck;
But we unleashed a lion.
