I went up to the surface, along with five others. In my belt I had my dragonslayer dagger. Wouldn't do much for distance, but if they got past the baseball bat, I had a back up. It was nice and heavy, my brother had given it to me for a birthday present, curved open blade, jagged edge on one side, and the handle was heavy and solid. Perfect for bashing and slashing. They gave us each a rifle, and about twelve bullets. I told them to keep the bullets, turning the gun so that I held it by the barrel instead. The other's had thought I was crazy. They laughed when I picked up the baseball bat I'd driven nails into ealier. They told me I was over reacting.... Four of them didn't make it back. They ran out of bullets as the Zombies closed in on them. Seems a bullet fired into their chest does nothing.
What I saw up there horrified me. Window's smashed out, some cars on fire, slammed into buildings. People littered the streets, some dead, some not so dead, but soon would be. We brought a Atv, with a tow behind wagon. One person drove, two rode in the wagon, the other three of us, we cleared the way. between all of us we cleared about a dozen zeds. I made the mistake of looking down an alley as we went past it. I saw Al. I'd known him since I was twelve or thirteen. He was on the ground, his wheel chair no where in sight. As he dragged himself forward, I noticed his legs weren't there. They were bloody stumps that ended where his knees should have started. His face on one side was scraped to the bone, bits of flesh clinging. I cried, and my heart broke. No one else saw, and for a moment I thought about pretending I hadn't either, But I knew I couldn't do it. I knew I couldn't leave him like that. Took about ten steps to reach him, I told him good bye, that I was sorry for what I had to do, and that I would miss him. Then I swung my bat as hard as could....I didn't want to have to do it twice. It took three swings before his head decapitated, and his body stopped moving. I wiped the blood from my arms, and ran to catch up to the others. AFter that, I didn't look around any more then I had to.
