I just turned and ran, not looking back. Soon I emerged on the basement level back in the Cafeteria area where we entered. I don't know if I can say thankfully, but some in our team were caught, and it caused a bottleneck that only allowed a few to catch up with the rest of us.

A couple of swings of our shovels and makeshift weapons, and there were now bodies lying there. Looking back down the tunnel, I could see maybe a dozen more, and I felt that there had to be more. A second later, they broke through.

"Run and get help NOW!" I pointed to a team member and shouted. He sprinted off.

"We've got to engage them here to keep them away from the women and children upstairs!" commanded one of the members of the team. "It'll buy more time for others to finish them off."

"You're right." I reluctantly sighed. We stopped running and turned to face them. These men, some of them were good fighters. Some probably hadn't seen any action since Vietnam. And of course, never any action like this.

Then they hit us. I can't remember much about it or how I survived. I just remember killing zombie after zombie. Every time I turned around, someone had been bit, and a new Z was there trying to bite me. All I know is that I was completely covered in blood.

It seemed like an hour, but the clock said it was only five minutes when some of the other survivors came down and finally aided in putting down the rest of them. All in all, I think we lost 20 people in that battle. Probably a dozen of them were wounded, and quickly turned, which made all the debate about Zombie bite ethics moot.

"Well, we still need food. Our driver is dead. Most of our team that was going is now dead. I don't know how I'm not dead. I still need volunteers, and the tunnel is the best way out."

This time no one raised their hand. In fact, the group began shouting at me.

"You KILLED THEM!"
"THIS IS YOUR FAULT!"
"My HUSBAND is DEAD NOW because of YOU and your BRILLIANT IDEA!"

"Fine then. I"ll be back anyways. Anyone want to come with me? At all?" I asked.

One person raised their hand. It was the young guy who ran for help earlier.

"Alright bro - let's get out of here." I said. And we were off.

This time down the tunnel there was no one. Very quiet. Until I heard someone shout from behind us.

"GOOD LUCK!"

I guess someone realized that they need to eat.

It was a straight shot down the tunnel. These tunnels actually connected all of these buildings around here, but I had no clue how and I wasn't going to get caught lost in a zombie stampede underground.

A few minutes later after some cautious walking, we emerged in the Lucas Building. The basement was empty. I think we cleaned all of them out in that battle back under the Dome.

We made our way upstairs and out to the door. I fully realized that we were in trouble for the time being. We had to make our way about 100 yards across an exposed parking to the next place we could take cover.
