Day 1: Z-Day; Part 11

Seeing the group of people coming towards us scared me for the first time since everything started. We still had to get the kids in the car and the people were already more then half way to us and they were moving fast. For a second I couldn’t think of what to do, I was rooted to the spot where I stood wondering if we were gonna have enough time to get them loaded and moving before the mob got there. I finally collected myself enough to tell Shannon and Jeff to hurry. I was heading back up the steps when I heard Jason yell, “Throwing gas” and Tony respond with “Cover, Flash.”

I had enough time to cover my ears before I heard the flash bang pop behind me. The first of the shots rang out when Shannon, Jeff and I were about half way back to the suburban with the kids. I threw Deedee in the back seat and yelled for them to get in and not bother with belting the kids in right now. When I turned back around Jason and Tony had slowly started advancing towards the group of people letting rounds go into those who didn’t get knocked down by the gas for flash bang.

“Jay, Tony load up we’re getting the hell outta here” The cruiser was already running and in drive by the time they jumped in with me. They were both on the passenger side of the car, still taking pock shots into the mob while I flipped the car around and headed back the way we had come. Shannon, Jeff and the kids in the suburban were on our tail before we were even a house down from theirs. The gas pedal was on the floor rounding the first corner. Over correcting from the quick turn I missed the second left onto Mariposa heading straight down “R” Street instead.

Making a left at the corner of “Kern” and “R” I glanced in my rear view to make sure the suburban was still behind me. When I looked back ahead I had to stomp the brakes and made a hard stop. There in the street in front of me was another large mob of people. A group that hadn’t been anywhere in sight when we had left for Shannon and Jeff’s place. I stared at the group for a few seconds contemplating what to do when I realized that it wasn’t a large mob of people but rather it was a large group of corpses. There were a lot of them and they were all Zombies.

“Left side. Left side.” Someone was yelling in my ear. I didn’t know which of the guys it was cause I was looking in the direction they were yelling about. The left side of the group was a lot thinner then the rest. I stomped on the gas as hard as I could and steered for the thinner side of the group. It would have been safer just going around but there were four children in the vehicle behind me and I wanted to get them to safety as quickly as possible.

The first couple zombies were dropped by gun fire before we even got to them. I slammed into two on the driver side and instantly felt the car jerk with corpses falling under the tires. I glanced in my rear view again and saw a zombie or two get hit by and then dragged under the suburban. We broke through the group easier then I thought we were going to and were about fifteen yards from the gate when I heard Jason yell “Open the gate” over the radio that we had taken with us. The cruiser slid to a stop with the suburban pulling in next to us just inside the gate. We were out and running toward the trunk before Sia had even closed the gate.

“Jay, Tony, we gotta get around the gym and clear that group before they follow us back here and bring more stiffs with them.” I grabbed the shotgun and rifle that were in the trunk. I threw the shotgun to Jeff then handed him my second side arm. “C’mon Jeff, you’re with us.” Shannon was just getting out of the suburban at that time and asked if she could go with us. Jeff asked her if she would stay with the kids for now and the four of us headed out around the gym to see if we could clear the group before they moved around too much.
