Vomiting had pretty much been the second most painful thing I’d felt that day. I was thankful for having nothing in my stomach. The heaving stopped shortly after it started but the pain radiating from my shoulder all through my body didn’t. I felt like I was going to fall on my face every time I took a step. I made it back to my cot to lie down. I was really grateful for the pain meds when the pain started fading again.
Trisha seemed like she was gone for hours. The cutting teams were already back putting the fence up before I heard her quad coming back. The sound died what I knew was a couple blocks away from the school. Suddenly the radio crackled to life with Trisha’s voice “Can I get a pick up someone? I killed my quad a couple blocks out. I didn’t want to bring them back in with me after takin' them almost all the way out to Matheny.”
Linda answered before I could even ask who was going. “I’m comin' to get you sissy. I’ll be right there.” Trisha was quiet for a second then responded to her mom “Alright but bring someone strong with you, this suckers heavy. I’m just inside the apartment complex at Martin Luther King and O” I heard the truck come to life and the gate be pulled open at the same time. Just then Shannon came walking into the cafeteria and sat next to me.
Jason’s rolling with Linda; he’ll be able to help with the quad. Jeff ran all the way across the school and booked it up the water tower just after she left to keep an eye out for her. He picks on her all the time but he worries about her so much.” She saw me eyeing her and could tell what I was thinking. “I know you’re still a little pissed at me for letting her go like that but I knew you wouldn’t let her if you had any say. Plus, she’s almost back and she moved that horde so far away from us. Look how proud my lil' sis has made us.”
Mike, Bryan and Tony came walking in from the enclosure. “Hey guys. Jason didn’t tell me anything before he took off. How’s the front entrance looking?” Mike came and sat next to my cot. “It looks good. We were able to reinforce the sections we cut with some half inch flat stock we found in the auto shop classes. So those sections are actually a little stronger then they were before we cut them.”
Bryan spoke up next. “The fencing is almost flush with the glass though and I don’t like that. If we’re gonna be here long I’d like to figure out a way to put the fence on the outside of the entrance area and actually extend it a couple feet.” Tony stepped up next to him and added “We could run the fence along the pillars out there. They’re a good three feet from the doors and actually make an alcove on either side.” “Alright guys, thanks a lot.” I replied. “Get ready for a fight. When that horde makes it here, we have to be ready for them. Tony and the guys walked away talking defense. I was hoping they could come up with some good ideas.
A few minutes later Jason called in their return. They pulled in with the quad in the back of the truck and Trisha sitting on it. I could see the smile on her face from where I was sitting. She jumped off the truck and Jason helped her pull her quad down. She pushed her quad back toward the trailer and Jason came walking into the cafeteria. “Dude, she rode the hell out of that thing. She took them almost all the way out to the Matheny Tracts. She stopped at that complex to keep them from following her back. She’s smart dude. She’s real smart.”
About a half an hour went by before Trisha came into the cafeteria. “I know you wanted to yell at me sooner but I had to clean my ride and put it up. It’s all about care. You take care of a ride and it’ll take care of you. Ok Vita. Lay it on me.” I was pissed about her taking such a huge risk. I said the only thing that came to mind “Thank you Trisha. I’m very proud of you for being so grown up and helping us like that. That was a very selfless thing you did and I can’t thank you enough. But if you do it again without at least letting me know, I’m gonna kick your butt.” A look of shock crossed everyone’s face but hers, “Oh you’re just mad because you didn’t get to help out.”
Jeff and Jason had returned to their posts watching the east end of the school. Everyone else was in the enclosure when one of their voices came out over the radio. “Hey guys, it looks like we have a stay until morning. The horde stopped at a house a few blocks down the street. It’s probably more survivors.” I was just about to ask if we should try to go help when Jeff’s voice interrupted me. “Well we might not make it all the way till morning. It looks like they making quick work of that house.”
We had a couple hours to go till they would be on top of us. I knew it was gonna be a hell of a fight and I wanted everyone rested and ready for what was heading our way. I grabbed the radio next to me and spoke to everyone. “Alright everyone, get some rest. We want be able to do our best when they hit us. Bryan, Tony and Mike, you guys help with the watch, Two hour shifts. Shannon, Sia, Ajay, Linda and Trisha, bring all the supplies and everything else we might need in the cafeteria. If they breach the fence we’re falling back here. After that everyone hit the sack. Nights falling and it’s gonna be dark soon.”
There were a few minutes of commotion while everyone was hurrying to get things ready. But the time the sky was dark outside everyone had done what they were doing and were turning in for the night. Goodnights went around the room and I shut my eyes afraid I wasn’t going to be able to sleep cause of the tension in the room. It felt like I had just drifted off when yelling woke me up. I opened my eyes and it the sky was already starting to lighten.
“WAKE UP!! EVERYONE WAKE UP!! THEY’RE COMING UP ON THE STADIUM. IT’S TIME TO GET THESE FUCKERS!!!!”
