CONTINUED FROM SHANNON’S JOURNAL
Ms. Rosie had just finished cleaning Vita’s shoulder when I stepped outside. My cell phone was still working and I needed to make a call. Zach had been one of the zombies at the stadium. I needed to find out where Jessica was. She was usually at home when Zach was out with the guys. Well, either there or at my house. She definitely hadn’t been at my house. I was hoping that she was home.
I punched her number in and hit the green button to call. It did one of those half rings and then went straight to voicemail. I immediately hit the end button, waited a second and tried calling again. Once again it went straight to voicemail. I started getting really worried after my third try. She always kept her phone on. Even if it died it went straight on the charger. It had been a day and a half since the shit had really hit the fan. I was hoping that she’d been able to hold together for that day and a half.
I found Jeff and told him that I couldn’t get a hold of Jessica. “What do you want to do Shannon? I don’t know if we’ll be able to go get her. Her apartment’s all the way across town. Even if we do make it there there’s no guarantee that she’s there. Even if she is there’s no guarantee that we’ll make it back.” I knew that it would be dangerous but “I’ve got to at least try Jeff. I can’t just leave her and those babies out there. We didn’t get left behind. I’m not gonna leave anyone else behind. I’ve got to at least try.”
He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me. “I love you Shannon. You know that. What ever you want to do, we’ll do it. We’ll figure out some way of getting there and getting her.” “I love you too Jeff. Thank you. Thank you so much.” I stepped back and wiped tears from my cheeks. Great, I did not need to start crying. At that point I had to find Jason. With Vita injured, he seemed to be the one in charge. I needed to talk to him about going to get Jessica.
I found Jason in sitting next to Vita’s cot. Ms Rosie had finished sewing him up. They had him bandaged and in a cot in the cafeteria. “I’m sorry Shannon but no. As badly as Vita’s injured he’s not going anywhere and he can’t defend the area if we leave him here.” I understood why Jason was saying no but there was no way I could let it go. “Jason I’m not asking to take everyone. I just want to take two vehicles and four or five people. I need to go see if she’s there.”
“One of those things was Zach. I tried calling Jessica and nothing. It didn’t even ring. We know the cells still work so why wouldn’t hers be working?” He seemed to think about it for a second then replied “So you want to take two vehicles and half the fighters he designated. You want to take them to get someone who might not even be there when you get there?” I needed some help if I was going to be bringing her back. I was about to keep arguing when a noise from Vita’s cot that caught my argument in my throat.
“Wha hap?” Jason and I both stopped dead. A tightness in my chest eased as I stepped closer to him. He was trying to talk yet seemed to be having trouble. “What happened?” My own voice caught in my throat. I tried to start twice and gave up when Jason started talking. “I’m sorry man. I didn’t get it in time. By the time I saw it, it was taking you down. I barely got the other one that was coming from in front of were you were.” Vita took a slow painful looking breath then replied “its ok… I’m still here… Can’t die that easy…”
I finally found my voice “I wish you’d stop scaring me like that. I almost lost my bestest once. I didn’t want to go through that again.” A smile flashed across Vita’s face then he took another breath “Everyone ok?” Jason replied, “Yea everyone’s ok. You were the only one injured. They took out the other three. Jason and Mike dragged you back here. Jeff’s still on the roof of the East Gym. They didn’t get to finish the sweep so he’s playing lookout. I’m so sorry Vita.”
Vita looked at me again “Scott. I saw Scott.” I lowered my head and told him the rest of what happened. “Yea, you saw Scott. The one that got you was Zach. He came out of the restroom. You probably wouldn’t be hurt so bad if I hadn’t hesitated. I couldn’t believe it was them.” I saw his hand reaching for me and grabbed it. He squeezed my hand lightly “It wasn’t your fault either. I was careless. I didn’t think about the restroom when I saw Scott.” I blinked a couple times and the tears I’d been fighting to hold back started falling one at a time.
I wiped the tears from my eyes. I looked at him as I kept talking “It wasn’t just Scott and Zach. There was also Beefy, James and Justin. We had to shoot them all. They were all changed. I didn’t want to but we had to.” The tears I’d fought back were now unstoppable “Vita, I can’t get a hold of Jessica. Zach was with the guys. Jessica has to have the boys and I can’t get a hold of her. I have to go get her Vita.”
He tried to sit up. His face twisted into a grimace of pain and he seemed to think it better not to sit up. He laid there on there cot and I could tell he was deep in thought. I could tell that he was going through his options in his head. Our years of friendship had taught me his tells. I knew when he was thinking randomly and when he was really deep in thought. Right then he was deeper in thought then I’d seen him in a while. At that moment I tried to make him feel the urgency and resolve I was feeling.
He looked me in the eyes and I saw his eyes change. I knew that in that instant he’d made up his mind and I knew I was gonna like what he was gonna say next. “Ok Shannon. We’ll figure something out. We won’t leave her out there by her self. I promise.” I smiled and ran out to talk to the others. I’d need a few people and I wanted anyone who’d want to go. I couldn’t ask anyone specifically. I’d ask if anyone would help me and see if anyone would.
