Empty Promises - Part 2

"He's not here," I mumbled in disappointment.

"Maybe   "

"WHY IS HE NOT HERE?" Tears began to form at the corner of my eyes and David stepped in, his arms wrapping around me instinctively.

"Hey common now, it'll be okay   

No it won't!

   we'll just gather some supplies elsewhere."

I looked up at him as I wiped my face clean of any tears. "David, let's be reasonable about this...you met the guy as he was leaving the hospital, barely talked for more than a few minutes and expected him to follow through with the delivery? I mean what makes you think he would give up his precious food just to share with some random strangers   "

"Okay Livy, I get it...it was a stupid move to trust him but now we have no choice. Let's just go back, we have a few hours worth of traveling and I'm sure we'll figure something out on the way."

"As you wish big brother."

We drove back in silence, neither of us saying a word. Suddenly, the headlights shine upon a single Walker crossing the street and David swerved to avoid it. My adrenaline kicks in as we head straight for a street pole, the impact jerking me off my seat but the airbag keeping me from going through the windshield. I try to catch my breath after such scenario. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see smoke starting to surround us and inevitably so, the Walker making his way towards the vehicle.

"Shit, you loaded?"

"I...I think so." A quick inspection confirms it. "I'll be right back," I say without giving much thought to my actions.

"Wait," he grabs my arm, "I'll come with you."

"It's fine really, I only saw one of them."

"Okay," he hesitates, "be careful."

I nod in reply and step out of the car. My weapon comes up to the ready as I scan through the darkness. My heartbeat can almost be heard as I slowly walk through the grass and try to locate any foreign sound. As if on cue, I hear some leaves rustling from somewhere behind me but before I can turn around a heavy object hits the back of my head and in a blur I fall to the ground, becoming unconscious moments after.
