It happened in seconds, and seemed like something out of a nightmare. Artemis and the others had been about halfway through the woods when they struck. Runners. From every side, they came. Gunshots went wild, and Artemis dove for the bushes. Artemis felt a hand grip his ankle, and he spastically kicked into the mouth of a zombie. It bit down into the sole of his shoe long enough for him to put a beretta to its head. After dispatching it, he crawled into the bushes, and heard different gunfire. And... Swords? Artemis looked up from the bush to see two men and a woman already helping Artemis' party up. Artemis approached them, and they introduced themselves. Thatch had a pair of desert eagles, there was another kid called Ace with a katana sword, and a woman who introduced herself as Nico. She had nothing more than a pistol and a bowie knife. After a short, and tense, break, they kept going, Thatch asking if him and the other two could tag along. Artemis thought for a moment. They would just be more mouths to feed... Artemis told them they could, and they set off into the dark. Artemis thought of the word 'runner' and shivered. They were fast, Runners. And deadl- Artemis was cut off from his thoughts at the sight of a long tail wrap around his midsection. He felt himself getting pulled up into a tree, and he screamed. He reached for his beretta, but his arms were wrapped up in the long, sticky tail. He felt a bullet whiz past his head to shoot whatever it was. He turned his head, and realized that what he was getting dragged up by was no tail. A zombie stood crouched in a tree, pulling its tongue in. It was a tongue. Artemis felt the saliva soak through his dungaree jacket, and he made a disgusted face. He saw how dangerously close he was to this strange zombie. The second he was within arms length, the clawed arm shot out and raked his upper arm. Artemis howled in pain and protest. Alli's sniping was too late, and Artemis fell to the ground. They all ran to his side. He tore off the sticky tongue, throwing it against the trunk of the tree. He moaned in pain, and cradled his arm. Everyone must have realized what just happened, and Thatch put a desert eagle to his temple. "Sorry pal, but you're dead meat." Alli tackled him before he could pull the trigger, and she wrestled with him, and she slammed him against a tree. Everyone turned on each other, and Artemis dragged himself into the bushes. He slumped against a tree as he heard gunshots. Everyone had turned on each other, and Artemis knew what he had to do. As the carnage escalated with the arrival of zombies, Artemis fled into the bushes, his abscence not noticed, the rustle of bushes drowned out by the screams on the dying wind.
