My name is Gabriel Black. I was born into a tragic world where just surviving is the best anyone can expect from life. You learn how to kill and live with. That is how the world is. Many don’t learn the tools they need to survive in this world and disappear before a blink of an eye. It has been 50 years since the planet began to die, and the evidence is all around. Half of the world’s population has died, and yet, they walk among us, hungering for our flesh. The wastelands of the earth are covered in safe houses and shelters. Homes of innocent people are in decay and the metropolis skylines are in ruins. It is a world of fear. It is a world of strife.
I began to collect journals as I moved from place to place, looking for food and other survival necessities. I found the journals in various places strewn about covered in the blood and tears of the previous owners. Words scribbled in them as if they will be last thing written by the narrator. Words etched in fear. As I looked through the journals, I took the profound entries and horded those away to remind me of how it started and what hope should feel like. There are, however, other entries I’ve kept over the year that have other effects. I can read about the brutality of mankind in one and of horrific denial in the next. Each entry rings through with some sort of insightful meaning for me as well I hope they do for you. The first entry is not from a journal however; I can only describe it as a memoir of how it all started though, I cannot be sure.
I feel that all these tales of sorrow and hope need to be read. They will remind the world of what humanity was like and what it was to have feelings, more than just the need to live. Each entry will open a new set of eyes, to the pandemic killing the planet, and take perspectives of many people, the good and bad alike. Maybe among this group of narratives, we may find what we need to give us hope to save the planet or perhaps they will just show the hopelessness in our will to live. I have become the keeper of the dead, and the dead will speak again. I suggest you listen.
