Smiles

12/1/07

As we sat in the night around a candle, talking, it was easy to forget what was wrong with the world, it was easy to take your mind off how fucked the world was. It was easy to sleep, feeling safe, and secure.

Morning came quickly, almost too quickly, being the first real night of rest in almost two weeks, waking up in a fucked up world, always seems to be a reality check, this isn't a dream.

I sat thinking about what my dad said last night, he was wrong.

"Dad." I said
"Yeah." He replied, still asleep
"What you said last night, about the shit hitting the fan, you were wrong."
"What do you mean."
"The shit hit the fan two weeks ago."
"Heh, I guess you're right."

Our peace was right then interrupted by the sound of pounding, everyone's eyes shot open, knowing we weren't alone any more.

"Girls. Attic!" My dad quietly called out "Phil, you're closest to the window, what do you see?"
"Nothing in site." Phil quietly replied back
"I'm going down stares to see whats at the door, John, you follow."

We slowly crept down the stares, and the pounding got harder, whoever or whatever was outside, wanted in. My dad walked to the living room window and pulled down one of the boards, it was a woman, but she didn't seem infected.

"She looks normal, I'm going to open the door shoot if she attacks." My dad instructed

As my father unlocked the door, her voice was heard, "LET ME IN, PLEASE!" He rushed to get the door open and she ran in.

"Are you alright?" My father asked, concerned
"Where you being followed?" I interrupted before she could answer
"Yes, no, I don't think so." She said, in a panic
"Yes, or no."
"I was a while back, but I outran them, they shouldn't be following me any more."
"Where you bitten?"
"No. I'm alright."
"Alright, come in, it's cold out there, but lets get you upstairs and get you looked at, then get you some food, and rest, you look tired."

I showed her to the attic while my father refortified the downstairs, my mother searched her for bites, she was clean. She ate some of our left over food from last night and slept through the day, while everyone was on lookout for anyone that might have followed, but it seemed clear.

"Did you get a name?" Nicole asked
"Katie." My mother replied "How are you doing on diapers?"
"15 left, but Autumn is doing good at using the toilet."

Night came quickly, with the concern of possible visitors becoming less, everyone felt comfortable sitting around the candle and talking again during dinner, Katie was rested, and our focus seemed to be on her.

"Where did you run from?" Ned asked
"I've ran from West Liberty, I was in a house then someone left because he couldn't stand being in the same place for much longer, next thing I know, I was the only one left, my family had been turned, and I started to run." She said starting to cry
"You'll be okay with us."

She nodded and went back to eating her dinner

"Well, I'm John, 18. That's Ned, Mike, Sean, Phil, Rich, Nic.." I said going around the candle
"I'm Nicole, and this is Autumn, she's soon to be three." Nicole said cutting in
"Susan, aged." My mom said
"Willard, too old for this shit." My dad said, smiling

She took our names in.

"Katie, I'm 19."
