I sat with the wireless at the window today scanned the frequencies much of it was white noise and intelligable babble found one channel a German guy yelling at the top of his voice having a merry rant I remember sitting there and thinking "Yeah mate broadcast meal on aisle 2" I turned him down as the Shamblers outside started to cock their heads in that "eh up dinner time" way this same routine went on for 10-15 minutes scan and re-scan then something that sounded like a question time debate caught my ear.
Two guys one woman by the sounds of it some bunker up north debating the best way that humanity can go on in a world where the dead outnumber the living I saved the transcript the best I can and dicatated it as I listened the man went by the name of Doctor John Groves as I remember I cant be clear havent slept since I found the channel he belonged to CDC he was assigned to London when the Virus hit super flu then when it mutated to the Campion he stayed on advised best he could missed the last plane out of dodge...
anyway heres what I picked up.....
Groves: Welcome listeners anyone who is stuck out there in what used to be the 500 mile cordon around London tonight I and my panel shall be discussing the world what little of it is and how we can best combat or at least learn to adapt to a world where the dead outnumber the living with me are Doctors Lucinda Walker and David Coombes both ex civilian and disaster studies Kings College have dealt with terrorist threats to the UK in the past.
Groves: (Cont) First of all Doctor Walker with the sheer volume of the dead how long can the human race hope to go on in its present broken state?
(Sound of a cigarette lighting)
Walker: I estimate or (coughs) we estimated at the Governments request that a flat rate would be 3 years....
Groves: Is that with the present rate of consumption and conversion?
Walker: Yes
Coombes: Thats of course assuming we are all going to roll over and die
Walker: We may not have much choice in the matter suicides, disease, murder will be a everyday norm in a world like the one that survivors live in we have to assume that this will be a accelerated process...
Coombes: And of course people dont have guns and dont kill the Dead do they?
Walker: (Tone changed angrier) They kill each other with those weapons the end of the world is not one big "Everyone comes together moment" people will be scared desperate and others will be able to take advantage of others... to believe otherwise would be naive beyond reproach
Groves: Surely people are still reproducing since 2007 there have to have been babies born on the move? in camps in conclaves?
Walker: I wouldnt see why they would want to....
Coombes: Reproduction I should imagine has declined the hazards of bringing up children in this climate are way to previlent at the moment humanity is locked into a survival instinct our species life span not being measured by weeks, months, years, centuries but now by secs, mins, hours, days However.....
Groves: ... Go on
Coombes: We could outlast them if we time breeding with the onset of winter it is PROVEN that the dead freeze they go into a sort of suspended animation this is when we can redress our numbers and equalise the balance... However the US has the idea from people I have spoken to of bringing the fight to them with this so called No Candles iniative making martyrs out of carriers
Walker: What this proposterous idea of strapping a couple of pounds of TNT to themselves and going out in a shower of limbs..
Groves: Modern day suicide bombers... good god!
Coombes: Precisely.
Groves: What about other plans being discussed or that were discussed and put into effect Russia's forced Quarantine,Japans defence corden and evacuation order and China's policy of defence of its borders by any means that resulted in the destruction of Peiking by Nuclear Weapons ... All now proven to be useless and utterly counter productive ... It seems to me that there is a lot of thrashing......
Thats when I lost the signal I was lucky to have it in the first place I just stared out of the window the spark of my soul growing dimmer the world was what it is now a diseased charnel house
"Living on Sec's,Min's,Hour's,Day's" this time about 10 years ago I was thinking about what job id have where my love of my life would come from being unemployed being a disappointment was the metaphorical "End of the world" now look at the world company coming from a bunch of dead moaning anomotons in the yard my own journal for company I stared at a bottle of meds a good couple of dozen in the bottle and yeah I thought "fuck it" I'll just swallow the fucking lot close my eyes and go to sleep... Wake up in Shangria -fucking-La...
But truth is im a coward and I am used to thrashing things out I may even survive and get to be one of those people who stands around whatever monument they erect in Whitehall to remember what frankly many would soon forget....
Anyway its dark now im gonna wind down and see what tomorrow brings....
Remember I existed....
