The TV fills the room with spasms of light as I flipped through the channels. Each one the same as the last. Nothing but news, clearly something important if all normal shows have been over-run by each news team trying to fill me in on the "latest national security update". As I let out a sigh of relief I threw the remote to the ground and humor the network ratings by tuning in. I mean it's not like I had a choice, right? A young woman's voice shoots into the room. "No one knows exactly what is going on, but it seems that the dead are coming back to life", she says. As she continues to talk I suddenly felt a bit more interested in the unfolding story. As I became more intrigued my posture straightened to focus more intently on the television screen. The camera pans around and abruptly zooms in. As it struggles to focus, human outlines become visible in the distance. As the shot becomes more tight and the cameraman finally gets the shot into focus I could finally make out what they making sure everyone saw. Never in a million years did I think I would see this day come. Corpses. At least 30, some missing limbs, some with skin peeling away from the skull, some were even missing complete sections of abdomen. Yet, they were moving, slowly, but still moving towards the news crew. From the set a loud gunshot rings through the house. The camera fixes itself onto the body that just fell. It almost seems unaffected as it pushes itself to its feet and continues on it's straight forward path towards the crew. "HOLY SHIT!" I exclaim as I jump to my feet, "It finally fucking happened. I told them it would, but noooo, no one believed me." Knowing what I had to do I threw on a pair of jeans, boots, and a leather jacket. It seemed to me leather would suffice as proper armor until I could upgrade to something a little more sturdy. I ran upstairs and threw open the door to the gun case. I reached inside and pulled out 2 tactical Ghost thigh holsters, each holding a Desert Eagle .50 caliber pistol. Next, I pulled out a Savage .308 precision rifle outfitted with a night vision sniper scope. And lastly, a sheath which held a custom made machete. I tied the sheath around my waist as I rushed down the stairs. I had friends and family I had to help. As I leaned against the door, peering out of the window I took a deep breath. I didn't see anyone, so quietly I pulled the door open and stepped out onto the pathway. As I looked down both directions of the street and didn't see anyone I knew I had to move as fast and as stealthy as I could. This won't end quickly. This won't end easily. "I'm coming, guys." I whispered under my breath. This is how it started for me.
