My feet pounded against the pavement as I sprinted into the neighbors yard. I slowed my pace to a mere tiptoe as I crept to the back of the house. Police cruiser, fire engine, and ambulance sirens could be heard in the distance. Accompanied by multiple bursts of automatic gunfire. Hopefully that would attract the zombies away from me. As I poked my head around the corner I could see a shadowy figure standing, back to me, in front of a bush. "Shit." I uttered almost inaudibly. I've seen movies, but I didn't know exactly how well these things could see, hear, smell, whatever they do. I had seen them move on the television, and knew they were slow. So either way, I figured I could take at least one of them out by myself. Quietly I unsheathed the machete and held it in a ready-to-strike stance. I slowly stepped around the corner of the house and snuck, literally ninja-like to the back of the zed. He rustled a bit as the sound of gunfire rang out through the night again. Apparently these things could hear better than I thought. Clenching my jaws, I lunged at him, swiping the razor sharp machete at the corpses neck. With a sickening rip the body fell, hitting the ground almost before the decapitated head did. There was one down. Who knows how many more to go. I let out a sigh of relief and walked over to the fence. A quick peek would let me know what I should be ready for in the next yard. I only had to make it 2 more blocks. I could either kill everything along the way, or just go stealth mission and sneak the entire way. A few of the streetlights had gone out, so I fortunately had quite a bit of shadow to help, thank god. My scout of the next yard yielded nothing but sites of a childs play equipment. From what I could see anyway. Even if there was a zed or two I could outrun it...I hoped. I jumped over the fence and lowered myself to the ground, running my eyes across the backyard. Clean. Another sigh of relief escaped my lips and I heaved myself up. As I lurched to the front of the house I could hear a soft scraping. It sounded like a shoe scuffing the ground. "Aw, fuck. That can't be good.", I thought to myself. I pushed my head around the corner and looked towards the sound. He was walking away from me. Unfortunately, the 2 on my right side were coming towards me. Had they seen me? Should I just make a break for it and hope for the best? Maybe knowing their capabilities would help me in the future. I waited for just a moment before bolting across the street. As I ran I glimpsed over to find them moving quite a bit faster than they had been before, but nowhere near fast enough to catch a full sprint. I just needed some cover. My eyes skimmed the next yard for anything to take refuge in. BINGO! There was a tree house. I knew the muscles of the dead couldn't handle the strain of climbing, so that was my chance. I could fight them from there for a while. I jumped to the rungs of the rope ladder and climbed as fast as I could. I pulled the rope up, just to make sure. I jumped with surprise as my cell phone began vibrating in my pocket, I quickly fumbled to get it out. Jeremy! He's safe, that's good. I flipped the phone open, "Hello?" the earpiece shrieked with feedback, "Dude, have you seen what's fucking going on?" he shakily spouted. "Unfortunately. Where are you?" I asked, peering over the railing of the tree-house. "Home. I'm good for now. Brooke and Adam are over here as well.", he stuttered. Relief hit me. "Okay, I'm on my way over there. Are you guys boarded up?" I asked, worriedly. A muffled, "Mhm" came across the phone. "Your mom said she tried to call you, but couldn't get through. She said her and your step-dad are safe as well. Where are you at?" I glanced around, "Umm, I'm hiding in a tree house in someone's backyard. I've got a couple of them following me, so I'm going to sit here for a little bit. I'll be there soon. Stay safe, man." I said quietly. As I closed the phone a quick, "You to..." abruptly ended. Twenty minutes, and then it's time get over there. Well, in theory, anyway.
