After a short rest I rose to look over the railing of the tree house. Below a couple more deadies had joined the two that had chased me into the backyard. With no way up into the tree, it was clear that I had the upper hand. I knew that I couldn't reach them with the machete so I was stuck using a pistol. I was pretty sure that the first shot would attract even more, but what the hell, it's not like there was anything else I could do. These things were the only obstacle blocking me from getting to my friends and family, and that's all that mattered right now. I pulled a Des from the holster and took aim. At such close range the .50 caliber round annihilated the skull of each one of the zeds. After the four stalking me were taken care of it looked as though the perfectly manicured grass of the backyard had been hosed down with some sort of curdled red paint. Brain matter laid scattered all around. Even the back of the house looked as though it had recently been painted...badly. I waited for another ten minutes or so to see if anymore would decide to rush me. Better safe than sorry. Especially in this instance. I lowered the ladder slowly and quietly to the ground before stepping onto the first rung. As soon as my toes grazed a single blade of grass I could hear the familiar snarling. I spun around and lifted my pistol in front of me, but a zombie with what appeared to be a broken leg just limped by the opening to the back yard. I gathered my senses and glanced over the security fence on the eastern side of the yard. Again, I didn't see anything or anyone in the next yard. But with the darkness seeming just a tad bit darker than normal I didn't want to be too hasty and just jump the fence with wreckless abandon. I lifted myself up to the top of the fence and threw on leg over to balance myself. I sat up and scanned the backyard for anything that could be a potential threat. Nothing. Fantastic! I lowered myself safely to the ground. Risking a sprained ankle or busted knee right now would prove to be almost imminently fatal. I could see Jeremy's house. One more street and I was there. I pulled out my cell and dialed Jeremy's phone. He needed to know I was making a sprint for his door and to have it open and unlocked. No way did I want to get stuck outside for even more than a second with no where to hide. The other end picked up, "Hey, get the door unlocked and watch for me. Make sure you open it, quick.", I told him. As I looked across the street I could see the curtains in the living room window rustle. I knew he had seen me. "Okay, COMING!" It felt like I took off faster than a jet on the runway. I was there, I could see the door opening when I felt myself slow down. My feet were pulled out from underneath me as something latched itself onto the back of my jacket. I drew my pistol and looked at what had grabbed me. Zach Brilt. A kid I had went to school with. He was leaning against the outside of a condemned house, but something was wrong, he seemed...different. "Shawn...please help me..", his voice was winded, almost lazily spoken, or slurred, "One bit me.", he said as he looked down to his leg. My heart sank. There was no saving him. "I'm sorry, I can't." I said with a tone that was sympathetic, yet stern. I grabbed him, and fired a shot into his temple. "That's all I can do." I lowered my head in a moment of grief before realizing there were more not 10 feet away. I shook off the feelings of guilt and jumped to my feet, spun on my heels and sprinted for the door again. Good 'ol Jeremy. He was at the door and it was open. I didn't run into the house, I dove. I wanted to get inside, and quick. I gasped for air, still winded from the quick sprint earlier. My head was spinning with a million thoughts. But we were safe. For a few hours. I have to get to my family. At least now I don't have to do this alone. We walked upstairs to the others after bolting the door. "Get some sleep. It's going to be a long night.", I told them. I closed my eyes and trailed off into a shallow sleep. We're all we have. Everything is going to be alright. We can do this.
