There's a thing that happens to aspiring filmmakers that I call gear obsession. This is where you feel you must have that Canon 7D or that Macbook Pro with Final Cut. You will convince yourself that once you have this mystical piece of gear you will be complete and more importantly you will be able to begin that epic project you have been planning. It may even be true, you may really need some specific piece of equipment. However, I challenge you to make do with what you have. Push what gear you have as far as possible. The best thing you can do right now is create something. Don't wait. Do it now.
You might be thinking, "but whatever I create with my shitty equipment will never amount to anything."
Or, "I don't even have a video camera! how do I make a movie?!"
Well, I found an example to prove that you can make a movie, right now, with nothing but a still camera.
The example is a film called La Jetee. It's a 27 minute film made entirely of still photos and voice over. This film inspired the motion picture
12 Monkeys starring Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis.
It's a bit long, but give it a chance, it's a fascinating approach to telling a science fiction story.
I challenge you to watch this movie and then create your own zombie film made of nothing but still photos and voice over. Let's see if you can do better.
