As I awoke, I felt a great feeling of relief. I survived my first day of the zombie apocalypse. I also felt very hungry, not having eaten in almost a day. I opened a box of canned food, and pulled out a can of peaches and a plastic fork. Up until this point I hadn't noticed Austin.

"Hey man." He said. "How'd you sleep?"

"Like a baby." I replied with a yawn. "You?"

"Okay, I guess." He looked at the box of cans. "You got any beans in there?"

I tossed him a can and a can opener.

"Thanks."

I nodded. As he ate, I looked around. There were sand dunes on each side, at least twelve feet high. I then thought about where we were going. Aunt Les lived out on the Outer Banks, in a three story beach house with Uncle Rodney. What two people would need a three story beach house for, I don't know. But Aunt Les was always a little, well, lets just say eccentric. She had her own generator, and enough supplies to last a while. I didn't know any of this for sure, but I know Aunt Les better than almost anyone. I looked back to Austin, who was finishing up the beans.

"Have a nice breakfast, sir?" I asked in my best butler voice.

"Yes I did." He replied, tossing the can over his shoulder.

We both laughed. Laughter was the only thing keeping us sane right now. I opened the back window to the cab and stuck my head in.

"Hey, Cody, throw me the walkie talkie."

He reached on the dashboard, and handed it to me.

"You have any more those cans?" He asked.

I handed him and Taylor two cans of peaches.

"Thank you."

I ducked my head back out into the back, and turned on the walkie talkie.

"Hey Mom, how much longer?" I asked.

A muffled reply came back.

"We're just about-"

That's when we heard the bang. It wasn't loud, just bright. I think it was a flashbang. I was up in a second, one gun in each hand, and Austin took up a shooting position on the top of the cab. But it was no use. We were surrounded. But I was suprised to see that they weren't zombies, they were live human beings. And somebody was yelling.

"Drop 'em!"

I located the one yelling. He looked to be about twenty-four, and had a rifle directed at my head. I looked around. There was about eight of them. There was eight of us. I glanced at Austin with his Uzi, Taylor with her M16, and Cody with his MP5.

"You first."

I looked at his buddies. They all either had shotguns, or rifles like their boss. I looked back at the leader. He had a nervous look on his face.

"Look," I said. "with the rather small amount of people that aren't eating each other left in this world, I don't think it will help the situation at hand much if we start shooting each other. Just let us through, we don't want any trouble."

He looked at his comrades, and lowered his rifle.

"Crap man," He said. "we're all scared senseless. We never wanted this."

"Nobody did." I replied.

"Well," He said. "since we're letting you through, I guess we should get you guys to town."

"That would be great."
