I'm originally from Los Angeles and have now lived in Las Vegas for about 4 and half years. I'm a make up artist and began noticing strange traits in my clients. I also began to experience many clients not even showing up for appointments. Sure, I have the occassional no-show. I mean, it's Vegas. not exactly the land of the reliable.
One day one of my regulars came in. She had booked a few days in advance to have her make up done for her impulsive wedding. Normally she was a beautiful, vibrant girl In her late 20's. I wouldn't have to work hard to make her look flawless. Today though, was a different story. Her skin had a gray cast, her eyes were sunken in. Something was VERY wrong!
Still, she was coherent. Mentioned something to me about a flu virus going around her work. I have to admit. This did make me nervous. As I haven't the best immune system myself. Still business is business and with the failing economy hitting my hard I couldn't afford to turn down work.
I sat her down in the chair near my work station. I began chatting with her about her wedding day as I cleaned my make up brushes with my back towards her. Her answers went from full sentences, to a simple "uh huh" and then..... nothing.
When her acknowledgment ceased, I turned and I saw her slumped over in the chair! I quickly ran over to her side. I pushed her back in the chair by her shoulder. Her head tilted back and I noticed a bloodied bandage through her blouse she had been concealing. I knew at that moment I had to call 911!
The phone was just ten steps away. I took the first two steps towards the phone and out of my paripheral vision I saw her pick her head back up. I turned quickly to see if she needed aid and noticed her eyes had changed. Once lovely, dark eyes of a latin princess now cold stone white. As if all the life was drained in a instant. Only two, tiny dots where here pupils were stared at me now.
My mind raced. I had heard of all the stories and rumors about this "zombie" outbreak and paid no mind to any of it. I knew the people that told these stories were just George Romero-Shaun Of the Dead-worshippers with overactve imaginations.
Now all my doubts and skepticisms had vanished. Here and now I had to admit. I had one of the flesh-devouring undead right here ready to have her make up done!
She stared at me as her lips parted and ruby drool came oozing out. I believe the noise she was making was supposed to be a growl but came out as a nightmarish moan.
I had to think fast! What would a make up artist have that could defeat a zombie?! What was that line in Shaun of the Dead?? What did I have to do to this thing to save my own life? "Remove the eyes and destroy the heart??" No, no.. that couldn't have been it! THINK BECKI, THINK!
She shifted her weight and pulled herself up out of the chair! She began to come towards me with a sloppy shuffle! I began to panic! I backed up against the wall. It was lined with shelves. A a slid myself along the wall I began to knock over brushes, bottles of alcohol and cleaner. My hand gliding clumsily I reached the end of the shelf and felt the cool, smoothness of a glass box mounted on the wall under my fingers.
With her just about 3 feet away from me now, her arms out reaching for me and her expression that of a starved wolf, my brain finally clicked into gear! I turned my head to read the box "IN CASE OF EMERGENCY BREAK GLASS" I ripped the small rod off of the side of the box and smashed the glass. The slivers flew thru the air and I could feel my skin seperate on my hand. I reached inside the box and grabbed the fire extinguisher. With all my force I swung it back. With her fingertips an inch from my nose I bashed her in the face with the base of the round, red cylinder. On impact I could see the cartilidge in her nose flatten and blood fly thru the air! Once wasn't enough! I wasn't going to be one of those STUPID bimbos in the movies that hits the monster once and leaves herself vulnerable to be attacked again! I kept smashing her in the face and head! As her skull gave way I saw a clear fluid leak from her head and dilute the blood. Then it came to me "REMOVE THE HEAD OR DESTROY THE BRAIN!" My body and mind on autopilot now I continued to hit her with full force. Now her body lay limp on the floor. What used to be her head just a pile of bone, blood and fluid. I lose my momentum and begin to feel exhaustion. I stop to see my work. My arms drop to my sides and the extinguisher slips out of my hand and hits the floor with a great thud.
"This is the first of many, I know it is". I thought as I plopped down in my make up chair.
