"You have to be kidding me" I whisper to myself.
Clear highway.
This is not good. I can't see far into the distance because it's pitch black, from what I can make out the next 100m of highway has no cars, just clear and empty road. Well, not completely empty. A few walkers scattered here and there, no more then 6. During the panic to escape the cities, people flooded the roads and highways. It must have been a massacre, with the roads blocked and no where to go, the dead ate there way down the yellow brick road. The miles of cars blocking the road have provided good cover till now, there aren't many walkers along the roads anymore but the ones that are still around I'd rather dodge then fight.
The centre barriers of the highway give some cover, all I have to do is crouch down and move along the centre barrier slowly. They won't even know I'm there.
Here we go
I creep out from behind the last burnt out car wreak, holding my shotgun, ready to fire... Now if only I had ammo. I make my way along the centre barriers. The dead are spread out about 20 metres apart and are just walking in circles, one of them is bent over something on the road. I don't wanna think about what it might be.
I sneak past the first walker, it's a male and dressed in nothing but a pair of board shorts.
Why would you have been out swimming at a time like this? I wonder to myself.
The second walker is female in a swimsuit. It seems to be occupied with it's hair. I stop to watch it a while, partly out of interest and partly out of caution. It's wandering close to the barrier but it's attention it absolutely focussed on brushing it's hair away from it's face... Or whats left of it. From what I can see the right side of it's face has been eaten away, exposing cheek bone and teeth. Maybe it should leave the hair where it is.
WHOOO! WHOOO! WHOOO!
What the #@%$ was that?! I scream in my head
WHOOO! WHOOO! WHOOO!
Car alarm. A god damn car alarm.
The sound was like Heaven had opened up and God was screaming "Here he is! Over here!"
The alarm was coming from a heading of me, I could see the lights flashing as it lit the whole area up. I didn't care where it was coming at this point. I just didn't want to be anywhere near it.
The walkers ahead of me had already started moving towards the car with the alarm, the male walker dressed in board shorts continued to walk in the opposite direction and didn't seem to care about the alarm, it seemed to already be interested in something else, something I couldn't see. The female walker I had been watching had snapped out of its trance and was moving towards the alarm as well.
I feel like a scared rabbit, hiding against a wall in the middle of a highway, gripping an empty shotgun.
I wish I had shells for this thing. I say it to myself almost as if praying.
Now that all the walkers have moved ahead of me, I can see what that walker was bent over now... A doll, a little girls doll. That walker was a little girl. It's sad to think how she would have died, so it's best I don't. I'm already in the open and can't turn back now, I have to move towards the alarm and hope I can use it as a distraction. With the sound that thing is making it's gonna have every walker in earshot making it's way down here. I break into a crouching jog towards the other end of the highway, I've decided to get as close as I can and check out how many walkers are around, I might be able to make a crouching run through the cars while the alarm keeps there attention... I might have to turn around and wait it out another night.
I manage to make it to the first car and duck down. Did I draw any attention? I look over the bonnet of the car, the lights from the alarm are much brighter this close and light up more of the highway... What I see I have no words for... There are dozens of walkers all over the area! I imagine that as the dead overran the traffic jams, people could only run to the sides of the road and out into the fields. The dead would have followed them and caught them eventually, the sides of the highways are mostly fenced off on this stretch road. The alarm is drawing the dead back from the fields and on to the highway. I have no choice now but to run. I check the path between the row of cars closest to the centre barrier and the centre barrier itself.
Clear.
The majority of the horde are moving in from the field on the left side of the highway, there don't seem to be many on the road or between the vehicles.
This is it.
I run. I run as fast as I can. The alarm is coming from a car 10 cars ahead of me in the lane closest to the field, so the cars in the centre lane and far lane give me all the cover I need. I run. I can feel how close they are and it terrifies me, the sudden jolt of fear gives me a much needed boost in speed. I hate feeling like this. Terrified to the point of running mindlessly. I was so scared I didn't notice the horde I was running straight into...
