Her drive home was very unpleasant. People she had grown up with were these ghouls… She still had that small glimmer of hope that home was still… okay. Cars were on their sides and upside down. The pavement was cracked and falling apart. The Highways were so far worse than the normal streets. God knows what was holding up those paths. Bodies either lay motionless on the ground or they were up and walking only to look for food living food. The young lady still didn’t know what was going on but she started to feel like this wasn’t the first time. “Of course this is the first time… ugh… what am I thinking? If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be alive.” She shook off those thoughts and continued her tight gripped driving. Swerving around the people… things… She had tried to get home as soon as she could.
She finally stopped at a small two story house. In that area, all the two story houses were small. They weren’t all nice and big like in the eastern and southern parts of the states. This house was a egg cream color and the windows were small, so not much light got in. While in her car, she looked all around. No person in sight. “Surprise surprise… Even in this mess this house is a fuckin’ loner.” The young lass always hated living here. She also hated what she knew lurked inside. Unlocking her door, grabbing her axe, then getting out, all happened quickly. She didn’t want to waste any time. The girl readied her weapon as she slowly open the door.
Inside was quiet. She heard faint music from the living room. The girl crept around the house not trusting the very soul she had lived with for about six years. Finishing the patrol downstairs, it was time to go up. “The guest room…” She gasped. She knew Louise would always go in there and weep. She breathed heavily but tried to monitor it as much as possible. Reaching the top of the stairs, she took a quick turn to the right. Soft moans and cries escaped the fully furnished guest room. Maybe she wasn’t one of them. She put down the axe and detoured in her own room. Thinking she closed the door all the way, air pushed the door open. She hadn’t realized and still reached under the cushion. Grasping the handle, she pulled it out. The girl switched her position to laying down reaching for a box. Almost grasping it, she was pulled back into the free space. The thing on top of her wrestled around with her. Dodging a few mouth snaps from the person she brought her feet in between the figure and her. Her feet tossed the person away making it fall hard into the wall. She quickly pulled the hand gun near her and grasped the handle tight. Pointing the barrel at the person, she realized who it was. The girl gave a smile. “God… I’ve wanted to do this for a long time. Go to hell where you belong.” Without anymore hesitation, her finger pulled the trigger sending a round to the center of the ladies head.
The history of her hatred was deep. It was so deep that it reminded her of her mother. They were so alike it wasn’t funny. The lady that was just shot was her father’s mother. Her grandmother and her mother always got on to her how she wasn’t girly. She hated wearing dresses, playing with girly toys, and shunned anything that would make her be liked the ones she dreaded. When her father died everything had changed. Her mother went crazy; crazier than normal. She began to hit her child and questioning god what she did to deserve all this. Soon after her time caught up with her, she ran the only way she knew how to. Without any tears shed, the young twelve year old had been sent to her grandmother. To her, life became hell. A bullet to her head was great. No more Louise.
Second thinking all this drama, she realized it was actually a bright turn around to her boring life. This also would become her new start. “I’m not a little girl anymore. Xaitaira takes care of herself.” Smiled and stood up she walked over to Louise’s body and pushed it out her door. She quickly closed then locked it for extra protection. Xai made sure her windows were closed tight and the blinds were closed over them. She went to her closest and picked out a black wife beater and a pair of blue jeaned pants. She pulled off her shirt then down with her jeans to replace them with fresher clothes. She dug into a small porcelain box and pulled out a double chained necklace. In the center was a small panda charm, given to her by her father. Out of everyone in her family, she loved, cared, respect, and resembled her father more. Her sister was the perfect child to everyone else but him and Carolynn. Yet Xai could not quite remember much about her sister. “Oh well…” She shook it away and gave a small yawn. She was exhausted and hadn’t slept in a few days. Xai didn’t know what her problem was but she couldn’t help but crawl into bed and dose off. Her conscious knew she shouldn’t but she needed it.
A white chapel was cozily decorated with purple streamers and flowers. A giant group of people swarmed the area. Everyone was cheery and excited. It was wedding day… A joyous wedding day indeed. Smiles covered faces in all directions. A few people were running around looking for the bride. She walked the halls trying to play jokes and have fun by hiding from the people in “need”. The blonde chuckled as a man grabbed her. “Found you…” He winked and gave her a hug.
“You’re not supposed to see the bride, yet. “She giggled. “It’s bad luck…”
He smiled and kissed her softly on the lips. Breaking it, he held her by the shoulders and looked her straight into the eyes. “Baby, you know I don’t believe in that stupid superstitious shit…”He stood up straight. “Now… Calm down. Elizabeth, it’s time to get this show on the road.”
She smiled an agreed. Hand in hand they walked to the main church hall and began talking to the people who were in the wedding. A pudgy and short woman walked up and covered Elizabeth’s eyes from behind. She came close to her right ear and whispered. “Hey baby girl.”
The bride turned around and smiled big. “Mother!” She gave her a bear hug and cheered like a cheerleader. A strong stern man walked up behind the mother holding a small girl’s hand. “Father? You guys came to Europe for my wedding?” She gave her dad a hug and just a smile to the little girl. “Hi, Lisa.” The small child just looked up at her and stayed quiet. “Still not much of a talker, are you?”
“She is… You are just never around her.”Her father said bluntly.
The mother nudged the husband in the side. “Stop.”She turned her attention back to Elizabeth and smiled. “Of course we came to see you baby. It’s your wedding day. I’m sorry your grandmother wanted to come but she had to work.” She sighed and hugged Elizabeth. “You must hurry. Can’t be late for your own wedding.” The family walked off, divided like normal.
Elizabeth ran to the entrance of the church and grabbed her bouquet. She was ready to walk. Music played making that her cue to walk in. Her footsteps were light and the pace was slow. Her mother was already in tears by the time she had reached the alter. She passed off her bouquet to the young red head bride’s maid. The bride and groom both smiled while gazing deep into each other’s eyes. The groom whispered towards Elizabeth. “This is it.” He smiled and grasped her hands tight. Jamison didn’t want to let go of his dear bride’s hand.
“We all gather here today, to unite Elizabeth Marie Levielle and Jamison Lee Dekker in holy matrimony…” The preacher went on with his speech. His white robe stood quite still, for he barely moved around. He was bald with a tall white hat on; more priest like.
Elizabeth’s mother was in tears while her father had little Lisa in his lap playing. He loved her, yes. But he wasn’t going to be like neither their mother nor their grandmother. He had enough love for both of them. He smiled down at her. Lisa smiled back and pointed at her elder sister in the cream fringed dress. The father looked up and watched the two nod and whisper between each other.
“Sissy…” Lisa giggled.
Xai’s eyes crashed open. Sweat rolled down the side of her face. The sound of shattering glass echoed throughout the house. “Crap…” She lightly whispered. Her hand grasped the handgun’s handle tight. She was ready. Xai knew she HAD to leave this place. Nothing was left for her. NOTHING. She looked around her room. Her eyes caught the sight of a picture of an old house with two people in front of it. “Dad…” The house was PERFECT. Her aunt, Carolynn, lived had begun living there after dad left overseas. She took care of the place. Carolynn was the type of person who wouldn’t let anyone near.
Xaitaira smiled at a few memories that came to her mind. Shaking them away, she knew where her next stop was. “Kentucky…” She got of the bed and dug into her dresser drawer. She pulled out a leather scrap with a pendent in the middle. The pendent was a piece of amber with a scorpion in the middle. It was a gift from Carolynn. After strapping it around her neck, she grabbed her axe and a few more pairs of cleans clothes. Xai went over to the window and crawled out. The fire escape had a steel ladder going down. It was yet still quiet outside. Her head turned back to the door as pounding came from the other side. It was a clean run to the car. She took the chance. Nothing came after her.
Xai continued to run. Reaching the car, she got in and straight away locking it. Throwing everything in the back seat, she started up the car as quick as possible then drove off just as fast. She pulled out her phone. It had almost a full battery. “That’s good.” Xaitaira smiled and switched it to the GPS app.
Her and her car was on their way to Kentucky.
