10/10/2007
The fires burned throughout the night. Buildings were burning. The only problem was that there were no sirens, no firemen, nothing. They probably didn’t care. Or worse, they were dead. Of course over three quarters of the world was dead.
I sat in solitude and listened to the sounds of screams. The only light in the house came from the fires outside. I tried to figure what to do to get to a safer place. As nice as my house is it’s not exactly the most secure place. Of course was there anywhere in Augusta that could be considered safe.

* * *
I have lived in Augusta, Maine for quite a while and never thought much of what the future might hold for me. I never once considered the idea of zombies overrunning the world.
October 10, 2007 a day that I wished that I wasn’t on the phone with my cousin Ryan. When he had asked me to turn on the news he sounded worried.
“What’s so important?” I asked him.
“Just turn it on Harlow!” Ryan exclaimed.
“Folks this is not looking good-”
“What happened?” I asked.
“Dude there was an outbreak of a deadly virus that turns infected people into zombies!”
Zombies. A topic that has fascinated me since I was just a little kid. But what were the chances of a fictitious virus becoming one of the new leading killers? A statistic shows that every sixty seconds one hundred and one people die. It seemed that now every sixty seconds more than one hundred and one people were going to die.
I watched the T.V. in amazement. For some reason the thought of what was on the screen both fascinated and mortified me. Of course I tried to figure out for myself if what I was seeing was real or a just another nightmare. Either way it was still a nightmare real or not.
“Ryan what… I don’t…” The words just wouldn’t come out of my mouth like I wanted them to.
“Harlow, we need to do something.”
“Like what?”
“I don’t know! Hey meet me around nine o’clock at-” His voice stopped.
“Where am I going to meet you?”
I was to busy thinking about other things to notice that the TV and other electrical appliance had gone out.
“Crap,” I said, “Just great!”
I looked around for a flashlight. When I found one I quickly grabbed hold of it. It wasn’t dark yet, but I knew that it would get dark very soon. I glanced at my watch. It read quarter past six. The time only made me wonder one thing. Where was I supposed to meet Ryan?
Ok so now we’re in present time and what happened next would determine my next plan of action? What would I need to do to survive?
I tried my cell phone, but nothing happened. If what was going on in the world was real, then all the lines would’ve been down. From outside the screams of people could be heard.
“Oh my God,” I whispered, “This can’t be happening!”
I cursed at myself for turning on the news. Sometimes it was good to educate yourself. This was an exception to that rule. I wished I hadn’t known anything about what was going on at all.
It seemed that the whole world was dead. Nobody cared. Not the neighbors, or the teacher you knew growing up. It seemed the hour of extinction was at hand. Nobody would be spared from their imminent death. You want to know the worst part of it all? Most people just let themselves get killed by zombies. They didn’t think of the possibility that there was a chance for survival.
I had made up my mind and was going to execute my plan. If I wasn’t meant to live then why would I be here? What could God, the divine creator, have in store for me and the possible survivors?
