I woke with my body being shaken violently as someone was bashing on my door, screaming for me to let them in, I looked through the hole in my door and noticed them covered, almost head to toe in blood, both old, caked blood and fresh, still running blood. Shocked, I reluctantly opened the door…

As I did a group of three people, consisting of a man and his two sons, rushed through, screaming for me to lock the door behind them, as I did they started raving at me, asking what I was doing in the city still… After they calmed down I found out that they were from only a couple houses up the street and had been fending of the zombies for days, the boys had already had to put a bullet through their mothers head as she had been turned the night of the outbreak and had killed… maimed… her own son, the boys younger brother.

I could not believe the stories they told me, alone, with their crippled father they had fought off so many zombies with nothing more then a crowbar, now deeply encrusted with bits of brain and covered in dried blood and a now basically non-existent piece of broken wood, with a nail crudely placed through it for extra damage..

We talked for hours, deciding what our plan would be, I told them of my 4x4, stocked to the brim with weapons, ammo and food.

But before any real plan could be made we heard many loud, bone-chilling roars from outside my house, the boys, wild with rage against the beasts’ rushed outside and started pummeling into them, I ran out after them, throwing them some lightweight barrettes. They roared in a kind of blood frenzy, splattering the zombies’ one after the other, I unloaded shots from the relative safety, behind their madness. I was using a handgun also, but it was not helping, the hordes just kept coming and coming…

I ran wildly through the house, hoisted the boy’s father over my shoulder and carried him to the 4x4, asked him to start the engine and grabbed my Father’s Saw-Off shotgun out of the trunk.

I ran quickly back to the boys, who were very well still defending themselves, the corpses of the zombies scattering my drive way, there bodies a beaten, bloody mess. I stood beside the boys, telling them to fire alongside me, we blasted away brazenly, not really taking the time to aim, my sawn-off shells tearing the zombies to shreds, their rotting bodies falling to bits as we blew them all away, I roared with delight, not knowing if that was a good thing, as I felt my sanity slowly fading away… I could smell their rotten flesh, their dirty, stinking breath burning my nostrils…

I shuddered in fear of the exhilaration I felt, but continued blasting away the zombies, I yelled out for the father to drive over and pick us up, there was no response…

I, the boys in tow, started to head back to the 4x4, the zombies numbers growing more and more by the second. As we near the truck I heard a piercing scream come from it… knew of the terrible fate that had just befallen the boy’s father… I handed the older of the two boys the sawn-off, telling to maintain crowd control as I checked on their father. As I opened the door the fathers limp, life-less body fell to the floor… “Poor bastard” I thought… “No-one deserves that fate…” I dragged him away and sadly, the younger of his children saw me and almost instantly broke down…
I ran to his side, trying desperately to help him maintain control over himself, even if it were just for the moment, as the zombies were ever becoming closer in on us… Our bullets would only last so long anyways.

I told the boys to get in the car, the younger refused at first, I screamed at him to listen to me and get into the damn vehicle, and I just wanted to help them after all!!! I was so frustrated; this was such a rude awakening….

As the engine roared to life, I stuck it in reverse, the boys firing shots into the zombies through the windows on either side of me, shots hitting zombies in the legs, arms, everywhere, some zombies legs snapped at the knee, completely shredding the bone and spewing blood everywhere.. They fell but kept trying to feebly crawl towards us as we sped through the gate and onto the devastated road.

I sped down the road, slamming into any lone or small groups of zombies, they were torn to bits by my big 4x4, their body parts flying through the air, covering my front window in thick, rotting blood, I tried to wash it away, the more I rammed into the thicker the blood would become, I sped up, the blood slightly coming off, enough so I could at least see where I was going..

The ride was relatively quiet, other then the scared whimpers of the boys… and my own terrible thoughts, flashes of the carnage I had witnessed flashed through my head constantly, It was haunting me, but I had to push through, I had to know what caused this… or at least know there were others out there, other survivors, people we could rescue.. I knew there had to be more. If there were, we would find them…
