Her world was white. White curtains, white tile, white sheets, white walls, white blankets, white shoes, white garments, white face, white mask. A shiver trickled it's way down her spine as she coughed up some blood inside her mask. Her lungs were rotting within her body. She reached over the rails of her death bed to the phone, covered in a shiny plastic that glared at her. It hate her, they hated her, everyone hated her. Shakily, she dialed the number that danced in her mind.
"Hello?" he answered groggily, being awoken by her call.
"Bubba...get...me....out..please." She paused frequently to gather air for a new word.
"I'll be there soon. Everything will be okay." She could hear him grabbing things now.
"Travis?" Her voice was just a whisper.
"Yes?"
"Take me to river."
"Of course, and we can go to Taco Bell and the movies...whatever you want."
She sighed. "Just the river."
"Okay, I'll get you out of there and we'll see the river and..." his voice trailed off. "I'll bring your things."
"Thanks, I'll be waiting.." Elvis inhaled deeply after hanging up the phone. Elvis wasn't her real name, just what people called her. Always full of life and personality, till she got sick. Doctors said it was the flu, then they said it was the Super Flu....then she heard murmurs of Campion.
Long claw-like fingers, cold and fragile, clasped the metal pole that held up her IV bag as she slid her blue and ivory feet from the white sheets and to the grinning white tiled floor. Bracing what little strength she had left onto pole, she stood and began walking uneasily to wide window. Her other hand brushed the curtains away to see the living, breathing city towering into the sky and spreading all across Duval county. What seemed to be mere minutes turned out to be an hour or so because now Travis walked into her room, wearing a white dust mask and arms full of clothes. After dressing, he rolled her out of the hospital in a wheel chair with a nurse trailing after them, screaming and yelling at them with threats of getting JSO. Hoisting her into the passenger seat of his jeep, Travis said one thing, "Call them." Seconds later, they were cruising through the hustling streets of Jacksonville in the direction of the Dame's point bridge. After a thirty minute drive of silence, they stopped underneath the Dame's point bridge. "You'll be okay, how many times have you been sick and got better? Hundreds."
Elvis looked over at Travis and nodded, knowing she believed these words just as much as he did. Not at all.
"Let's go to the water!" Trying to sound cheerful and full of energy she punched him in the arm making him grin and open the door. She opened the door and half fell out of the Jeep just before Travis grabbed her arm and pulled her back to her feet. "You okay?" She nodded and slowly walked to the water's edge. Cars above them sent tremors through the bridge base and to the ground as boats chugged along causing waves to nip at her shoes. All was silent as she knelt at the edge of the river, grinning like a child she dipped her fingers in the water and watches the sparkles drip from her finger tips. Mesmerize by the water, she didn't hear the stomping from behind her. Closer and closer it grew before it leaped over her and into the water, making the water splash in her face. She fell back, wheezing and giggling as Travis stood over her casting a great shadow through the late sun. "Mean butt!" He shrugged as he sat down beside her, one knee brought up to his chest and the other stretched out. She sat up and slowly stood, gazing at the water and boats. "I can see why people jump off of the bridge to kill themselves. It would be the last thing I want want to see before I die too." Her hand twitched as her muscles locked up. Her vibrant green eyes hazed over with a slight gray, but Travis took no notice to this and spoke. "It isn't as great as my woods. I'll take you there agai..." He was cut off by soft growl. "Sis?" It was returned with another growl as he stood and backed away from her, unsure if it was a cruel joke or something from a movie. She turned, gazing at Travis with hungry eyes growling softly. "Errrrrrrrrrrr.....errrrrrrr......errrrrrrr...." He gasped and before anything else could happen, children laughed from the distance, drawing her attention instantly. Her head jerked to the noise and then to Travis before she sprinted off in the direction of the happy Crews family. Travis ran for his Jeep and before he could even open the door, he could shrieks and and crying just from the other side....he drove off, swearing to find her another day.
End Transmission.
