Southern Survivor Part 12

Blake bent down to read the piece of torn paper. He looked over the lines of typed bold letters and couldn’t believe what he was reading. A new small government had been formed by a few surviving politicians and several army units. They controlled an area of around six miles in north-western Kentucky.

William and Jenny walked up to Blake while Joe stood guard by the jeep. “What is it?” William asked. “Some politicians and military units have set up a new government about sixty miles away from here,” Blake said handing the piece of paper to Jenny. “Do you think we should head that way?” Jenny asked after reading the paper. “I think we should stay on our own for now. But we could start to head in that direction incase we decide we could use their help,” Joe said walking towards them. Blake nodded his head “yeah I think that’s a good idea.”

Joe nodded to Blake and looked around. He started to speak then jerked his head to the left and shouted “runners!” Joe raised his AR-15 and fired off three shots at the approaching runners. Rounds tore through the lead runner and it staggered back from the impact of the bullets.

Blake raised his Mossberg to his shoulder and fired. The Mossberg’s shot went towards the second zombie and destroyed the head from the nose up. He pumped the shotgun and fired again. The last runner’s right shoulder disappeared in a explosion of rotted flesh and other gore. Joe fired his rifle and ended the shoulder less zombie’s existence.

The first runner that was shot struggled back to its feet but Blake and Joe fired together and the headless corpse fell to the ground. Behind them Jenny screamed and they turned to see an armless zombie reaching for Jenny with its one arm. William cut upward with his machete. The blade went into the flesh below the creature’s chin and the creature collapsed to its knees as the blade entered its brain.

“Come on. We need to go now before more of them come,” Blake said after slinging his Mossberg and walking towards Jenny. Joe and William jogged back towards the jeep and got inside. Blake put his hands on Jenny’s shoulders “you okay?” She looked up and smiled “yeah I’m okay. Just a little scared, but I’m fine.” Blake looked at her for a few more moments then started walking towards the jeep.

Jenny ran to catch up with him and took his hand in hers. He looked at her and she smiled. He smiled back and walked with her to the jeep. He opened the door for her and got inside. He cranked the engine and said “Okay, lets head to this “new government.”
