Gary was starving, for over two weeks Gary and Wesley had been eating wild fruit, beef jerky, and the last of their supplies. Now they had no supplies left and neither one of them knew how to hunt, they were both city boys. As children they imagined the country as a place where rednecks attended cross burnings and in the country there were things that were slimy and crawled. It had been a month since the battle at the house and John’s execution by Gary and none of the towns the two had passed through had any food or medical supplies.
For the tenth time in as many minutes Gary’s stomach growled, announcing its hunger. Several yards away, Wesley was sitting on a turned over bucket, drinking water and looking into the surrounding forest. He seemed some how better off than Gary, like Wesley had been eating something that he was keeping away from Gary. Gary began to think of this new possibly discovery, it was possibly Wesley had found something to eat in a abandoned house or store. Either way Wesley had been acting strangely during the day after the search of the nearby town, like he was trying to hide something from Gary.
Anger began to boil inside Gary but before he started to yell a new idea came to him. At first he almost laughed at the dark irony of the thought but then he took it serious. He could do what the zombies were doing and he could kill Wesley and feast on his remains. Wesley’s corpse, if he was careful, could sustain him for almost ten days or so.
He finally worked out all the details of the plan in his mind and decided how he would kill him. He slowly put a hand on his thigh, close to his right hip holster that contained his glock 40. “Wesley, could you come over here, I want to show you something.” Wesley slowly rose to his feet, grunting as he did so. The tall man started to walk towards Gary looking around as he did so.
In one practiced fluid Gary jerked the pistol out of its holster and shot Wesley twice in the chest. Wesley’s eyes widened at the realization at what had happened then fell to the ground, dead before his head touched the soft dirt of the camp ground. Gary cracked his neck, holstered the pistol and stood up and walked towards a grey duffle bag. He dug around inside and pulled out a bowie knife. He turned around and cut open Wesley’s shirt and slide the blade into the area where his liver was.
After several minutes of cutting and slicing, Gary pulled out what was once Wesley’s liver and looked down at it with pure animal hunger in his eyes. Without cooking it first Gary bit down into the bloody meat and vigorously chewed the organ. He was so into his meal that he didn’t hear the movement behind him.
What Wesley had been hiding actually hadn’t been food; he had been jumped by a zombie several hours earlier when they were scouting the town and had been bitten by the creature. Wesley rose behind Gary and gave a low groan. Gary turned around only to look in horror as Wesley grabbed the shorter man and bit him in the neck. His screaming turned into high pitched gargles as more zombies heard the sounds and came to join the feast.
