The Fallen World: Part 4 - Isolation

A week pasted, my suburb town slowly became a ghost town. Thank God the city workers left the utilities online when they evacuated north. Jonathan, Leanne and I decided to wait for the majority to leave before we move. We all knew that the water a power would eventually fail as the power plants, water pumps, and treatment equipment ran without be monitored or maintained. What was also good news was the satellite phones and internet was also left on to all subscribers until the resolution of this crisis. A presidential order when marshal law was enacted.

We occupied our time setting up the solar, generator, and survival gear. In my attached garage we armored my F-150 truck with front and rear brush guards and bumper-to-bumper steel skid plates underneath. We also toke a propane fuel conversion kit from an Autobacs down the street as well as portable water-gas generators and empty propane tanks from Home Depot. I worked on modifying the water-gas generators, originally intended for welding, to fill propane tanks. While Jonathan worked on installing and tweaking the propane conversion kit for the truck to work with water-gas. Our idea is to use our truck, and eventually our generator to work on water-gas which we can easily generate from water, and in-turn have a perpetual fuel supply for transportation and power generation.

Leanne interrupted our work, "Guys we got a problem." We quickly got up and ran to our upstairs control room, luckily I had a security system installed a year before and had cameras installed. However they showed a small group of zombies wondering the in the street. I got the .308 rifle and attached the home-made silencer. I placed the barrel in the window and set my sights on the rear most zombie, I steadied my breath and aimed for the head. *PIFF* and it's head exploded, the rest kept shuffling down the street, I gave a sigh of relief. It was the first time I had used the silencer and it worked beautifully. I placed my gaze through the sights and finished off the group.

Another week pasted before the truck was packed and ready for when we decide to move. Power gave out three days ago, water still flowed but gradually became foul and needed purification before drinking or used in cooking. I took the hard drives from my home computers and packed them in a pelican case, on them were photos, masters of my films, business and personal documents as well as my extensive music and movie collection i backed up before power gave out and an external hard drive enclosure to access them when I want to with our eePC. A time-capsule of my pre-zombie life. I also began a video-journal when people started to evacuate, as a film maker I felt it was my duty to tell my story and of those I survive with. My Panasonic HMC-150 recorded on SDHC which was a blessing, I can store decades of footage in one large pelican case and the cards are wide spread throughout the country so no shortage of recording media. And above all they are resistant to water and are shock-proof.

I setup the camera and began recording, "November 28, 2012. Day 16. We have finished retro-fitting the truck, and are ready to depart. The water is becoming increasingly foul, most likely from a failure at the water treatment planet caused by the lost of power a few day ago. Food stores are still plentiful, however our purification supplies are nearly depleted. We will need to move soon, or at least riad a outdoor supply store, tho I'm not sure how much is left. Zombies are few, but still roam the streets once in a while. On a psychological note, everyone is sleeping less, things are far to quiet to be comfortable. Leanne seems to be taking the worst of it, tho we are all feeling it. I'm restless, snappy at times, sometimes I'm on the verge of paranoia. Prayer helps, and somedays we get by on prayer alone, keeping our sanity has become our top priority." I looked down at the cement of the garage, then I stare into the lens of the cam, "We need to move, and soon. We need to do something, anything, even if it means we always fear for a zombie attack. Cause if we don't, we won't need the zombies to kill us."
