"Is everyone ready?" I asked the group. Everyone nodded. "Alrighty then," I said, putting my shotgun up to the door, "Now die," I mumbled, pulling the trigger. BOOM, the Z was blown away, along with most of the door!
Damn that felt good!, I thought, as I kicked open what was left of the flimsy door. "Everyone get your ass to the garage!" I yelled authoritatively. They didn't need to be told twice; one by one the others burst out of the house, on a mad dash towards the garage.
Now outside, I could see the horde had definitely caught up with us. All around the backside of the house, Z's crowded for a chance at getting inside. Moments ago, their only motivation with that in mind. Though, with the little stunt I just pulled, their glazed eyes slowly fell upon us!
"Move!," I bellowed, now chasing after the rest of guys. Behind me I could hear the ominous moans of the Z's as they slowly pursued. Not thinking, I snatched my pistol and blindly let off a few shots into the crowd behind me.
If luck was on my side, I might have taken down a straggler. If not, well there was a possibility there may have been a repeat of what happened on our trek down here.
To be honest, the distance from the back door to the garage was a relatively short one. Perhaps thirty feet or so. And with the horde, moving as slow as, well, zombies. It wasn't quite as dramatic as one might think. Though, despite the circumstances, I will say the it got the adrenaline pumping!
When we'd reached the garage, the others all stood huddled around the door. "Get out of the way, I'll unlock it," I shouted.
I had keys ready in my hand when someone fired from the side. The gun shot had caused me to jump back in surprise, when I noticed someone had blown a hole where the door handle had been. "No time," Cory proclaimed casually as he pushed past me, and into the garage.
The others turned to me in astonishment. "Whats up with him lately," Cody asked worryingly.
I shrugged, "Who knows," I stated before following, into my grandparent's garage.
The garage was just as I remembered it, for the most part. Dirty. Tools, as well as other assorted junk lay strewn across the floor and counter tops in every which direction. Though amongst the cluttered mess, lay our ticket out of here. Grandpa's dark green pickup!
It appeared Cory had already scaled the mounds of junk, and was making his way over to the driver's seat. "Key's!," he called.
"Who say's your driving?" I jeered.
"You got a problem with that," he muttered without looking.
"Nope," I chuckled as I tossed him the keys. "Just don't go wrecking the thing. It's not even mine."
"I'll think about it," he laughed before slamming the door shut.
I was about to open passenger door when I heard a cheerful, "Shotgun," from none other than Tony as he strolled through the door behind me. I sighed reluctantly and stepped away from the door. Relinquishing my seat.
"Fine, it's all yours," I smiled as I hopped into the truck bed. As Tony giddily took his seat at 'shotgun' I looked to the others. "Pile up in back!" Both did so without question. It was weird to see, Jacob and Cody act this way. So calm and collected, without the slightest bit of emotion. I mean this was the sort of this we'd used to dream about doing before the outbreak. The least they could be doing is having some fun. Then again maybe I was the crazy one for acting this way, who knows.
Once everyone had settled in the back of the truck I heard Cory shout, "Alright is everyone all nice and cozy back there, so we can hit the road?"
"Yea, hold on a sec; let me do something real quick," I called back. I think it's time to have a little fun, I thought. "Alright boy's," I said now facing Jacob and Cody. "O.K., now I read this in a book once. Cody let down the door, would ya?" He cocked an eyebrow at me, as if to say what the hell are you thinking? I just gave a nod, and as if he was completely reassured he did the task without a word. I know I must've seemed like a maniac, at the moment. But Cody trusts me, and that's all I needed.
"O.K. now I you guys each take one of those hunting rifles out of those packs, and lay down. We're going to have some target practice."
Cody did so without question, though Jacob seemed hesitant at first. "Dude, do you really think this is safe?" he questioned.
I chuckled, "Man, I don't know, but it sure as hell will be fun." I'm not quite sure if this put him at ease, though he did take out the rifle regardless. "Alright Core (not a typo), get us the fuck out of here!" I hollered.
There was no answer, but instead the wine of the ignition. Until the engine roared to life! Now we're in business, I thought as I lay down. As the garage door creaked open, Cody turned to me and muttered, "So what exactly are we doing again?"
"Well bud, all I want you to do is pop off as many shots as those bastards as you can."
"That's it?"
"That's it, trust me." I spoke reassuringly. I was cut short as the truck lurched forward out of the garage.
When we pulled onto the driveway, the Z's had finally come into view. Now, completely oblivious to the house or the garage, the entire horde had set their sites on us, and slowly but surely they began to hound after us. I suppose when it had become apparent their prey was on the move, the truck became their prime target. Unfortunately
"Alright, mow em down boys," I muttered. And so we did; though I'm not so sure of their progress, Jacob and Cody seemed to be throwing away bullets like candy. As you might imagine, at that moment,I would have killed for some earmuffs! Adding the sound of two rifles to my own, my eardrums felt as though they were going to burst. God damn it, what a dumb fuckin idea, I thought to myself. I'm not sure if whoever is reading this, has actually heard a gun shot. Though I will say it's louder than a mother fucker!
Despite the noise, I somewhat managed to concentrate on the task at hand. Though however hard I tried, it was nearly impossible to line up that perfect head shot. Come to think of it, it was difficult hit any of the Z's at all. As you will soon come to realize by reading this, I'm not quite what you would call a 'good shot'.
Thus, missing most of my shots, I sighed as I set down my gun. Truth be told there really hadn't been a point to this little stunt. Other than the fact that I'd thought it be fun. But seeing how, at the moment, it wasn't doing anything other than wasting ammo. I thought, why bother.
From what I could see, the others seemed to be enjoying themselves. Though there shots seemingly random and ineffective, I was beginning to see both of them act like themselves again. Grinning as they took aim. Their eyes wild with enthusiasm as they took the shot!
That was when, suddenly, the truck took a violent jerk. Causing the back end of the truck to somewhat, fishtail. I guess Cory was having a blast driving, as he whipped the car around the corner. Luckily Cody and I had been on the inside of the turn, thus not feeling the anything.
Though it wasn't until we heard Jacob's surprised cries that we noticed the force had caused him to fly out of the truck, and into the hungry hands of the zombie horde. Everything seemed to slow down at that moment. The sounds of the world grew distant saw his eye wild with terror. "Jacob!" Cody called after him.
Oh no, I thought.
