Chloe and I were walking across the parking lot on our way to the truck to finally go home. Chloe was carrying most of my things in her bags, when all at once she dropped every one of them. I turned back to help her and ask her if she was ok.
"Chloe, are you ok?, Do you need me to carry those things?"
When she looked at me, it was as if she didn't know who I was, she started to say something but I couldn't understand her. Something about our party or something about a trip, I really wasn't sure what she was saying. She stopped talking for a second, then she started yelling, yelling at me! The next thing she did was very unexpected. In all our eight years of being together Chloe had only slapped me in the arm or maybe a small punch, you know, for an inappropriate joke or looking back at another woman walking down the street, but not this time, this time she slapped me! Actually she slapped me twice before I could block her swings. I was finally able to grab her by her wrists and stop her attack. When as fast as it started, it stopped. She calmed down, then she went completely limp, If I hadn't of held on to her when she fell she would have hit the ground. I was looking for help from some of the people walking by, some were even running, but not to me, not away from me either, they were just running. But none of them, not even one, stopped to help us, or for that matter even payed any attention to us. I mean I could have been someone attacking her with the way she was yelling a minute ago and nobody would have helped her.
I let go of her arms and slid my hand under her head.
"Chloe, can you hear me? Chloe? Are you ok?"
That's when her eyes started to roll back in their sockets, and it looked like she started to have some sort of seizure, she was fighting for her next breath. Then, she stopped, she stopped everything, stopped squirming, stopped moaning, stopped breathing!
That's when it hit me, that feeling again. I hadn't felt it since the night I got the phone call and was told that my parents had died.
"Chloe!, Look at me! Chloe!" I held her face," Oh no! Oh no!
"HELP! Somebody please, help me!
"Chloe Breath! Please! Chloe don't do this! Don't die! Chloe!
That's when I thought Chloe died. But she got up after that. She actually jumped up. Jumped to her feet, and looked at me, then while growling at me, she lunged forward. I stepped back, almost falling from the bags that were scattered about. But she didn't try to grab me or lunge at me anymore. She just took off running. Running faster than I've ever seen her run.
"Chloe! Stop!"
I could see she was getting closer to the street and rush hour traffic. Everybody was still speeding, so they wouldn't be stuck in it when it slowed down once everyone was off work and on the road. The speed limit through there was 45 mph, but I'd say, the traffic was going closer to 55 or 60 mph.
Chloe was running right towards it, she wasn't slowing down either! The closer she got to the street, the louder I was shouting!
"Stop! Chloe, Stop!"
That's when it happened. Chloe ran right into the path of a car going about 60 mph. The hit was so hard, when she was in the air, her shoes were still sitting where she was standing. She was tossed about 15 feet into the air, and spinning like a windmill. I could see her neck snap when she landed on the concrete street below her. I knew there was no chance she was alive after seeing that. The woman that I loved so much, was no longer.
Steam and pieces of the car flew everywhere when it hit her. It was clear that it wasn't going to be driven away. As I ran to Chloe, I could see the driver in the car that hit her. He wasn't trying to get out, he wasn't trying to do anything. He just kept his head forward and kept sitting there.
It felt like one of those dreams when I was running to her. The ones where the harder you run, the harder it is to get to your destination. It just felt like that, like I would never get to her.
