The Road to Resolutions.
The sky overhead darkened, the ominous clouds gathering overhead only helping the sense of depression and helplessness that had so recently begun to cling to the occupants of the suburban that rocketed down the road.
He had only been driving for about half an hour since they had left town, and already Joseph could feel the nagging sense of doubt building in the pit of his stomach. Right before their departure from the police station John had asked him if he would like to drive. Needing something to focus on he had happily accepted, opting to give the already over stressed man a break after the events of the day.
He switched off the radio as the girls in the back shifted at the sudden lack of ambient noise, their sleep fitful and riddled with sudden jerks and muttering, each woman playing out their own fears in their minds. He reached behind him and rubbed lightly on Liselias' leg, she smirked in her sleep and nuzzled her head deeper into the seat cushion. He was glad she was getting some sleep, as all afternoon he had watche the look of growing despair on her face from the news that came over the radio.
None of the broadcastings had been very uplifting, each of them reporting different unsubstantiated occurences. Yet no matter how far apart the reported events were, they each held the same basic ingredients that made their validity hard to swallow for eveyone in the car. Those who had contracted the campion virus and passed recently were supposedly coming back to attack the still living. Joseph prided himself on his ability to call bluffs through many years in the military and the police, but the effect he was seeing on the country as a whole with everyone unanimosly packing up and heading to greener pastures was not reinforcing his belief that the hearsay on the news wasn't real.
Outside the vehicle the wind had picked up into small gale as the rolling storm clouds kicked into high gear, leaves and pine needles flashed by as the trees swayed in time with the building storm. Rain pattered down on the wield shield, the steady rythm this caused only added to the surreal picture these things painted.
"Joseph? Joseph are you alright?"
The sudden question snapped him out of his thoughts and he had to grip the wheel quickly as he almost turned it in shock.
"Sorry man you had a glazed look, didn't mean to startle you." said John as he straightened in his seat and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. As he put on his glasses, Joseph looked over and for the first time noticed the effect that the days events were having on his friend. Johns eyes were sunken and the bags beneath them were dark and heavy, he seemed older as if within the last few hours he had aged considerably.
"No no its alright, I was getting too far into my own head anyways. I'm glad for the concious company." he said, John nodding with a grin as looked outwards.
"Think this road Ethel suggested will be a good choice?" asked John.
The road they were on at the moment, was a back way out of town, it led away from the congested main highways and looped in on itself at lake Ontario slight northwest of where they had begun. Ethel John's wife had suggested it after they had heard reports of mass jamming on the main highways leading south. They had taken it hoping that they could reach the city of Syracuse further south and then continue on to Florida from their. So far all they had achieved was depriving themselves any signs of human life.
"I guess so John, so far its been pretty empty aside from the odd animal or two but from what I can tell, we are making....good....time..?" The last few words out of his mouth came out slow and seemingly as a question.
Up ahead a faint light could be seen in the growing dark of night, it was flickering and the radius around it was too erratic to be a normal light fixture. It appeared as though a fire had started, but how something like that could occur in this weather befuddled both of them.
"You see that right Joseph?"
"Yah I do." he replied.
John turned to wake both the girls, their heads popping up slowly as he lightly shook their legs. Joseph could see his wife in the rearview mirror, even now with everything going on he couldn't help but take a moment to admire her. She was tan with long dark hair that curled slightly at her shoulders her deep green eyes were content looking as always, even in their current situation. He smiled as she looked at him not knowing if she were awake enough to register much, she shook her head and stretched and yawned as she finally began to come to.
"Whats going on?" asked Ethel, as she rubbed the aches in her neck.
"We think somethings going on down the road." he replied, indicating with a jut of his chin the odd glow on the side of the road before them.
"Didn't want you guys asleep while we had all the fun." joked John, his wifes' pale face scrunching in a frown at her husbands somewhat sarcastic jest. She lightly rapped him on the back of the shoulder, Joseph and John laughing a bit as Lesilia continued to shake off sleep. It was the first sense of care free happiness they had gotten all day and the group sat in it for a moment, everyone of them knowing that since that morning they had all been gripped in a feeling of enexplicable urgency and foreboding not once having ever gotten a solid explanation as to why.
