What goes on inside a pre-zombie's brain?

What does a human think of in those seconds of darkness between death and zombism?

Screaming into the dark, I can feel my mind unraveling.

My feet are planted on a solitary rock, waves crashing around me.

The cold of wet stone penetrates my body as the wind howls at me, carrying with it sands that cut into my skin.

The waves grow and barrel into me, knocking me over. Yet, I cannot be torn from the stone. I look down to find that my ankles are bound by rusted chains.

Dark clouds gather in the sky above while I silently contemplate my existence.

Why am I here? How did I get into this situation?
What will the world think of my existence or…my lack thereof?

Raindrops trickle down my skin and send shivers down my spine.
I breathe deeply, closing my eyes, becoming oblivious of the storm overhead.

Reaching a moment of pure tranquility, my mind clears.

An epiphany? Contentment?

Describing it is impossible.

But it’s okay, finding a word doesn’t matter because words are scarce when you’re alone.

The world outside doesn’t matter.

There is only me, the rock, and the waves.

My chains break, releasing my bloody feet and ensuring my freedom.

Taking a deep breath, I dive into the ocean that rises up to swallow me.

The tides calm as I float down into the emerald depths.

I close my eyes as my body goes numb.

Will I feel deaths gentle embrace, or will I be doomed to float forever in the gentle bliss of the water?

It matters not, for either way I understand for the first time…..

……True peace….
