First, a little background: this was a script I wrote for our department's contribution to the Halloween festivities at work. (Halloween is by far and away the biggest event of the year - far surpassing Christmas. All the departments decorate, create skits, etc.) With some minor tweaks and a whole lot of improvisation, we performed this about 10 times throughout the day. Needless to say, it was a blast. I played the role of the reanimated zombie. It fits in very nicely with the Lost Zombies theme. So, without further a due, for your reading pleasure....
Zombie Emergency Room
Observers stand near the entrance to the emergency room and are greeted by a military police officer / security guard. Inside the emergency room and to the right of the MP is a hospital gurney with a “dead” patient on it, evident by a toe tag. The “dead” patient is restrained to the gurney. To the left and behind the MP is a makeshift operating table where doctors and nurses are frantically working on a patient. Sounds of drills, instruments clanging, and mumbling voices are heard in the background. The operating table is obscured by a white partition that is lit from behind, casting the shadows of the surgery team on it. The overhead lights are flickering on and off as if the power is going out.
The MP addresses the observers. He is panicked, visibly distressed.
MP: I want to thank you all for coming, but I’m afraid you’re not going to want to stay here long. About 6 hours ago, local law enforcement agencies from across the state started getting calls about incidents of extreme violence involving murder, body dismemberment… and even cannibalism. Follow me.
The MP slowly leads the people toward the middle of the room – facing the operating table.
MP (continued): At first the 911 calls were dismissed as pranks but when people began flooding into the emergency rooms, it became obvious that we had a large-scale, massive problem on our hands. The military was called in… we just don’t know what’s going on. The patient here (points to the “dead” body on the gurney) was brought in about 15 minutes ago and he’s already dead. I’m going to let the doctor explain what he thinks is going on. Doctor?
One of the surgeons steps from behind the partition, loosens his facemask. The observers’ attention is drawn towards him. Lights that were previously flickering overhead are now shut off - the only lights on now are behind the partitions.
Doctor: Well, it looks like we’ve completely lost power. Hopefully, the generators will hold out. (He shakes his head and continues.) The violent behavioral outbreaks we are experiencing seems to be caused by an infection or a virus. It’s spread from person to person through the transfer of bodily fluids - typically from a bite – which then spreads quickly throughout the blood stream. What we are trying to do with this patient (gestures to the operating table) is stop the spread of the infection by amputating the leg.
In the background a sawing noise is heard and the other surgeon lifts an amputated leg. Blood splatters on the floor.
Doctor (continued): Even more frightening than the speed with which this virus is spreading, is the fact that it doesn’t stop after the patient is dead.
The “dead” patient on the gurney begins to make gargling and groaning noises, twitches and starts to move in the restraints. The doctor doesn’t notice.
Doctor (continued):Once the infected victim succumbs to the virus, after twenty minutes their body is reanimated and they become a…
Suddenly the “dead” patient breaks from the restraints and leaps from the gurney.
The doctor blurts out the final part of his sentence.
Doctor (continued)… a zombie! Oh my God!!
The zombie lunges into the crowd and attacks one of the observers (a stooge). After releasing the stooge observer, the zombie throws aside the partition and starts grabbing bloody body parts from the operating table, tossing them about. The nurses scream in horror and back away. The patient on the table screams in torment. The MP and the other participants try to restrain the zombie and wrestle him to the ground but fail until he is finally bashed over the head.
All participants appear exhausted but relieved.
Doctor: What are we going to do? Is this the end of mankind?
The End?
